I think Nas gets the "he cant pick a beat" label because as far as mainstream singles go he hasnt had many.

Then you look at who he most often gets compared to (Jay Z) he was constantly on MTV BET, The Box, & the radio.

But you trippin sayin you didnt fuck with Illmatic but Hate Me Now was your shit?

I will say everytime he drps an album and i see Swizz Beats on production credit i know that track is trash

Production wise, yes I fucked with that song.

Swizz beats have always been overrated.

Jay Z has the best Eastcoast sound when it comes to beats/production.....

Nas always had trash beats to me no matter the song, i think he tries to find the shitty beats on purpose so you're forced to listen to his story bc that's all he cares about is the story he's tryn to tell, NOT the actual music behind it...

i think streets disciple is the album that really solidified this. Nigga picked one too many uninspired, dull beats. he's been struggling to break that curse ever since that release. Only way to redeem himself might be to do a whole album on dilla or premo joints

wow, that Streets Disciple album was horrible. The production on there sounded like it was from 86. I remember so many times a beat would start out ok but then he changed it halfway through the song and fuckin ruined it. The only songs I liked on that album was Thief's Theme, Just A Moment, and War. I hated it that much. I agree that nas kind of killed his momentum for a while here with this album. It crawled to platinum status, compared to god's son which had a bangin single straight out the gate going platinum in a month.

God's Son also had some ugly ass beats for sure:

Zone Out (no need to comment on this one)

The Cross (abomination, i don't ever want to hear it again. clown beat)

last real nikka alive (garbage beat again. its almost an acapella)

hey nas (trash)

mastermind (very underwhelming.)

dance (even though it's supposed to be soft, the beat is still kinda weak here, too,but definitely not the worst.)

that's already half an album of weak beats. hip hop is dead wasn't any better either. an A+ rapper should be rapping on A+ beats.

Legitimate gripe. Nas beats are either perfect or ridiculously horrible. Also his vocals at times sound terribly mixed. Every DJ Premier beat he's done has been classic. But any other producers are hit or miss. If I were Nas I'd of let Premier do about 85% of all my shit. But Nas ear for beats have always been atrocious

Zone Out is the only track i cant stand on that album. The rest were cool to me

That nigga Nas beats do be generic as hell. Gotta set your alarm clock just to remind yourself to not fall asleep through some of them shits

Nas's worst beat was The Cross on God's Son. I think they (his label) made him rap over an Eminem beat because Eminem was hot at the time.

Having said that, Get Down was a GOAT beat. I thought God's Son was banging from start to finish except for The Cross. I never understood why people didn't like Zone Out.

Streets Disciple was hit or miss.

Life is Good was dope from start to finish

If I Ruled The World was GOAT

Nigga said the beat to "Last Real Nigga Alive" was garbage smh KYS

He (probably) writes to whatever beats inspire him, so if that's the case ya just have to deal with the beats.

What kinda sheep shit is this

Music equals beats and rhymes and they dont make music on an island. We dont have to 'deal' with shit

If beats didn't matter almost every early Jay and Nas album would be classic. But they're not, mainly bc of beats
