For the following reasons:

1) He was slapped with the "nerd" tag for the computer hacking intro (understandable, since "nerd" like behavior was stereotypically seen as anything that promoted socially awkward endeavors), yet rappers now can't stop using technology to beef with one another (see the various Twitter feuds that have sprung up over the years).

2) File sharing (especially with music) really took off in 1999 (Napster).

3) He was being original, especially when many intros were featuring themes many have now come to criticize rappers for over-glamorizing (death, gunshots, ambulances pulling off, heart monitors reaching flatline, etc.).
