In the md-late 90s ppl once said that Nintendo fell behind Sega..... until Sega filed for bankruptcy (reorganization which led to a terrible merger in 2001).... kinda interesting how history replays.... Sony lost 4.4 billion dollars & hasnt made a profit in 4 years.... coincidentally Sega had the same problem not turning a profit in 5 before going out of business.... The Japanese were smart, they avoided console wars with the Americans and new of Sega's financial troubles b4 the market did. It was all just a matter of time from there....
Bad management, tooo much debt and releasing products faster than the market & its own developers to keep up with killed Sega. Nintendo is one of the most innovative companies in the world and has always played the game smart. Today Nintendo makes up for 53% of the market share (61% if you add handhelds) of the video game market with Sony & Microsoft fighting for scraps.....

So who publishes Sonic games these days?
Sega Sammy and sometimes Nintendo (when they do joint ventures or have portions of their 3rd party design teams working in conjunction with Sega Sammy's) publish Sonic games.
When Sega folded a company called Sammy Corporation came in and offered to do a merger. Originally tho, Sega crawled to Nintendo and asked them to buy them out. Thing is... Nintendo ONLY had an interest in buying the Sonic franchise and some of their develop/graphic companies. For Nintendo they said the hell with Phantasy Star and all the other brands under Sega. As embarrassing as it was for Sega to even ask Nintendo to buy them, Nintendo declined on their second offer and instead would rather see them go out of business. Fortunately for Sega the Sammy Corporation took a huge risk and offered to do a merger with them that would see the Sammy Corporation inject lots of cash to rekindle Sega. Later on Sega merged and became the Sega Sammy Corporation. Thats why Sammy Corp is so involved with Sonic and other related games.
Ever since then Sega has remained a small player in the gaming industry, more intent on doing licensing deals to sell Sonic's name to whoever will help finance a game. But dont be surprised if Microsoft buys the Sonic franchise, they already bought Rare and the rights to Killer Instinct from Nintendo. Microsoft has been on an aggressive move to buy and create franchises cuz thats the only thing they lack for their gaming divison. They need something that can cross over to not just adults but all walks of life too.
