The game is saturated with so much terrible and god awful music if someone is able to come in and consistently make average music, they will be able to make an impact.
You can't come into the game spitting a bunch of complex shit and expect to get on (notice the J. Cole hate), if you can come into the game and appeal the average hip-hop fan by saying a bunch of decent average/punchlines about ice and car and also manage to release average track after track without faltering to the terrible zone (which 95% of rappers do ie one hit song then trash record after trash) you can become a star.
You don't realize Big Sean isn't anything special because there is so much trash coming out nowadays that when someone can come out and manage to be average people are like "whoa, this dude is ill" but you're only saying that because he's not trash and consistent at what he does ie average music.

Cole really a Nas type; creative content first. Hearing Cole Work out party track just dont sound right. Like Nas making U Owe Me feat Ginuwine. That song woulda been dope if it were anyone else but for Nas, it seemed forced, false or sumthing.
Big Sean is a cool, happy-type rapper with more style than substance. Like a mix between Wiz and Kanye.
Cole is a dope rapper with more substance over style. Simple as that. You can appreciate both if they make good music in their lanes.
