GOP Sen. Tim Scott: Trump Isn’t ‘Singling Out Minorities’ With NFL and LaVar Ball Tweets

In recent days, President Donald Trump has engaged in a public feud with sports dad LaVar Ball stemming from Ball’s son and two other UCLA basketball players arrests in China for shoplifting. Trump has taken issue with Ball’s insistence that the president didn’t do that much to get his son released by Chinese authorities, leading to numerous Trump tweets indicating that the players should have been left in jail.

These tweets, along with Trump’s continued complaints about black NFL players kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice, have led many to observe that the president has a tendency to take aim at high-profile minorities. During an appearance on ABC’s This Week, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) was asked his opinion on Trump’s attacks and whether he felt the president was specifically targeting minorities.

“The president is a good counterpuncher,” Scott told host Martha Raddatz. “He doesn’t seem to discriminate from my perspective. He attacks anyone he perceives or believes is attacking him or the country.”

After Scott said that Trump should have been thanked by the UCLA athletes without having to ask for it, Raddatz pressed him again on whether he believed Trump wasn’t “singling out minorities.”

“I will tell you, from my perspective, the answer is no,” Scott responded. “There’s no doubt that if he were singling out minorities in the basketball situation, he singled them out in a positive way.”

He added that Trump stepping in was a “powerful move” and that there could have been “really negative consequences to those young folks.”
