My review:
When you turn on the TV/Internet/radio these days, you can’t help but notice a new plea concerning an old concept: Civil rights in America must improve for Black America to advance. Over the last 30 years, the consciousness in Black America in the struggle for true freedom has featured Hip-Hop in the forefront as becoming the loudest voice for the voiceless. In the 1990s, that voice was at an all-time high, with seemingly every act in Hip-Hop touching upon it in one-way or another. By the 2000s, that movement had been relegated to the underground, while the more profitable version of Hip-Hop took control.
With the mass police shootings and the election of “he-who-will-never-be-named-by-me” (except in a quoted bar), the Hip-hop world has started to take notice, and while songs have been sprinkled to address these new challenges, no one has put together an entire album that lays this out…..until now.
Hailing from the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY, 22-year-old Joey Bada$$ has channeled his energy of fighting this new and scary system into a full-fledged protest concept album – his second major album - entitled “ALL AMERIKKKAN BADA$$.” Joey pulls no punches either; he’s very aware of the platform he now has in his rise from a mix tape rapper, to a legit emcee in the rap game, and uses that to both showcase his talent and development from the 1999 mix tape and Summer Knights EP to 2015’s B4.DA.$$, and feud with Brooklyn rapper Troy Ave. Now, it seems, Joey finally has the eyes and the ears of the youth and a message for the powers that be in America.
Why this album will be the “coming out” party Joey needs: First off, if you’ve never heard a track from him, you’ve missed a new dimension of New York hip-hop that, quite frankly, disappeared with the rise of the “trap/mumble” rap era. Joey has always been a solid emcee, complete with jazz beats to compliment his style. ALL AMERIKKKAN BADA$$ (AAB for short) gives him a truly righteous cause to focus on, and he does it straight out the gate. Form the intro track “Good Morning Amerikkka” (prod by DJ Khalil) he states his mission that his generation is here to fight back against white supremacy and corrupt law enforcement that have dominated the headlines. “For My People” the hook sums it up: “It’s for my people/Trying to stay alive and just say peaceful/So hard to survive when we’re so lethal/Who will take a stand and be our hero?” However, Joey actually sings at a decent clip on this album to somewhat lighten the mood. The album’s lead single “Devastated” (prod by 1-900, Kirk Knight, and Powers Pleasant) is a pretty awesome example of this change. “Land of the Free” serves as the album’s second single, and its most powerful one, with bars such as “Sorry, America, but I will not your solider/Obama just wasn’t enough, I need some more closure, and Donald Trump is not equip to take this country over/Let’s face facts cuz, we know what’s the real motives.”
What stands out here is that while Joey perfectly encapsulates the almost-now lost East Coast boom-bap sound, he does switch it up nicely. “Y U Don’t Love Me” (prod by 1-1900 and Powers Pleasant), in which he talks to America like she’s a female, has that laid back trap beat flow. Like any real album, this falls no short on guest appearances, such as Styles P from The Lox on “Super Predator”, TDE’s Schoolboy Q on “Rockabye Baby”, as well as J. Cole on “Legendary.” “Ring the Alarm” takes a break from the cause to just showcase Joey and his Pro Era squad – Kirk Knight, Nyck Caution, and Meechy Darko – doing what they do, to an ever changing track that gets darker and darker with Scarface chords fueling the way. The final track “Amerikkkan Idol” comes with Joey reciting a blistering free-written poetry-style verse, summing up what really needs to be done to get true freedom in 2017 America.
Why Joey still might be overlooked after this: To be perfectly honest, thismight will offend a few folks, as how in-your-face his message may come, such as his verse on “Rockabye Baby”, stating “Who else, it’s just not us/If you bout this revolution, please stand up/We ain’t got no one to trust/Time is running out, feel the burn in my gut/and if you got the guts, scream FUCK Donald Trump!” (Yeah. The shots at the Creamsicle’d leader of this country are there on this album). That may turn off the mainstream, and probably get him a few mentions on Fux News with the next month or so (and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Orange One tweets how “disappointing” the album is). Other than that, I got no complaints with Joey’s latest effort.

Final Thoughts: ALL AMERIKKKAN BADA$$ is simply a well-needed state of expression right now. This album gives a new generation a voice in their say of state of new-era chaos against the newest generation of Black Americans. Joey, who for the most part, shines brightest at focusing his own rage without getting preachy or off-centered, has certainly transformed his style from a mixtape rapper to an emcee with a real purpose. With the many producers that contributed to this album – aforementioned DJ Khalid, 1-900, and Statik Selektah (who created a incredibly smooth groove on “Super Predator”), Joey has been blessed with fusing very modern sounds of hip-hop with his old modus operandi of soul and jazz samples to give us all something to fire up and fight back with. Not since the early 90s has one album given a voice this furious about politics and civil rights, and I believe that Joey’s abilities combined with his message, is now ready to take his place as one the new leaders of hip-hop.

After reading everyones thoughts on this album, 99% of the reason will shit on kendricks album on first listen and under rate his album the same way niggas gassing this album.
