I'm questioning the hustle/networking skills of the girl with the MPP.

Nigga with the library sciences degre...that's his dumbass fault.

College is important for credibility purposes but college means nothing if you can't make a brash decision, think for yourself, or lack ambition.

stay strong all my college niggas and don't join the military, it's not worth it. My advice is to work what you can get and do some volunteer work in the field you majored in to build your experience for when the market turns around.

after undergrad I'mma go overseas for a min....cause I can't see myself staying here working at Target as a team member with a degree

Please explain this^. What exactly are you going to do abroad? are you aware that the recession is global? how do you intend to pay for the trip/cover the expenses of living abroad?

The recession is NOT global. South East Asia & South America are BOOMING. Do some research. I just came back from Asia and there is NO recession going on what so ever. Don't let America fool you. It's us and Europe that's looking bleak.

I mean if you started finish, even tho some people never go back! At least you'll be able to say you've did it.

One thing I wanted to touch on and bootcheese brought this up originally:

man that's EXACTLY what i was doing: getting an internship, trying to meet people. ect. my problem was i was in brokeland and those folks up there are HELLA JELLA, they don't wanna see ANYBODY get ahead. if they're not succeeding in life then they'll do whatever they can to make sure you won't. the school i was attending wasn't shit either, i didn't get a chance to meet with an adviser on what i needed to do for a internship let alone write up a letter to give them, the muthafucka was never in his office. the people i was trying to start a internship with were just as worthless, it was clear that they didn't want me around or not seen by their would-be clients for obvious reasons. how you gonna be whyte and have issues with black people but open a business in downtown oakland? after all this bullshit and other problems i had to leave cali for good, i got fed up with all the problems i kept having on the south side as well as the north side.

The thing is, people can only give you advice, unless the person is a mentor or someone who is really wanting to help, forget these paid advisors! Especially some of these white workers in the black community, because these guys think they could say anything and people believe them. I'll give you an example, I graduated from Stockton College in New Jersey and during my job search I wanted to talk to the job advisors at the college (its a mostly white college). Now I just got my resume professionally made so I can have something to base the resume structure on, and with that resume I was getting calls and interviews already, so I go to the career center just to get their take (I didn't mention about the calls, interviews, etc.) This is a white lady, seeing a black man in a suit, having her reviewing my resume and asking about the career field. Don't you know she totally shut down my resume, saying "what is this" "you don't need this" "you're not going to get hired with this", all she was doing was ranting me saying "my resume shouldn't be that long" in which it was only 2 pages. She wasn't given me any advice about the field or any advice at all. So at the end, I tell her that I have an interview in a week, and her whole attitude changed, she rushed me outta that office so fast. That was not worth it! And I got the job too!

So basically talk to people at career development centers (not from the colleges unless you are confident of that advisor) or even temp agencies that may try to put you in the best position. But don't rely solely on them, talk to mentors, some of your friends who are in the field, ask for informational interviews and research on your field, unleash the hunger to get in and maintain that until you feel you're comfortable where you are. Because only you have control of your career.

Well this is what Im doing. Im doing Nursing, so I can get a job pretty much anywhere in the world. Its not really my passion though, I know it doesnt seem like im a good writer judging by my punctuation I use on this board but writing is my strength, and I love hip hop to death, So i was thinking to just build my own brand, interview artist this summer, start my own blog, learning how to use Photoshop, photography, transcribe interviews and talk about politics in my blog, build a portfolio and intern for MTV in NYC next summer while im going to school for nursing. So by the time im done, Ill have a degree in nursing and i have some experience in the Communications field without having any education in it, all self made.

BUT i will say I pay 10x less then the average american citizen for college, cuz i pay 3,000 a year for university. Its funny because the univeristy of toronto is a top25 uniseisty in the world but yet tuition is 5,000 a year, disgusting. America needs to step it up. ASAP. Canada is the place to be yall, to be honest everyine thinks "oh canada whack, its not as good as america, drake from there" but man this place got opportunites for days, when ur set here ur set man. Free health care, Schoool is cheap, matter fact going to trade school here, YOU get PAID to go to school, thats right u heard me.....YYYOOOUU get PAIIID for school (in trade school that is). I mean u pay first but then when ur in there ur a direct intern getting paid 12.50-14 dollars an hour.

SMH @ America literally going down the toilet and people fighting over scraps

I just went on an interview last week...the man told me in the middle of the interview while going over my resume "I'ma be straight up with you, because you graduated college you're automatically put above certain people..." that along w/ being bi-lingual and I got an offer for a job at a higher starting pay rate than any of the other 2 people who were also offered the same position, the company was looking to fill 3 positions...trust going to school does matter to certain employers...not even your GPA because I wasn't at the bottom but I was nowhere near the top of my graduating class...

I hate the whole high GPA game when it comes to looking for a job, some of them say "oh we want someone with a 3.0 GPA". While they can move someone from within that job in the same position and he/she probably didn't even go to college.

seriously check, go back and check from 2000-2008 the top 10 jobs for each year

I'll do the year I graduated high school

Computer software engineers, applications 48%

Physical therapist assistants 44%

Dental hygienists 43%

Computer software engineers, systems software 43%

Dental assistants 43%

Personal and home care aides 41%
