Well of course not everyone knows there is like 15 ways to make money off of music. Their are alot of misinformed people out their like yourself. Plus rappers since they are really self employed can put away a larger amount of money away in a Solo 401k,SEP-IRA or SIMPLE IRA than a regular 9 to 5ers can. Niggas just to stupid to do that plus you can get benefits from ASCAP.

So wait, lol....rappers is putting away $ in retirement plans now. This must be like the stripper myth...cause I haven't heard too many 16s where cats were talking about diversifying their bonds. Giving advice on whether I should go with Charles Schwab or a good broker.

they don't but they could there are a ton of long term investment opportunities out there that people don't take advantage of in all walks of life. Do you know what a Roth IRA is ?

Now here I was thinking if I pointed out the concept of average twice, that it would prevent some simple minded fool from reaching. Like everybody caking on an indie label. If that was the case, why would anyone still sign to a major .

I guess everybody who opens up a hot dog and pork and bean restaurant gonna expand their franchise to McDonald's status also, huh.

You have more creative control on an indy and you make more off of your albums

If you're on a major label, you have more exposure/bigger push and will likely be able to demand more $ for shows, more endorsements, and movie roles.

It all depends on how you perceive your career. If you have the skills/charisma/image to as big an artist as Kanye/Jay Z/Drake/Weezy, etc then it's definitely better to sign to a major.

Someone like B.G.(after Cash Money days), Cormega, Jim Jones, Saigon, etc is better being on an indy b/c they won't sell much on a major and will end up owing the record label $ after they recoup the advance.

Ima say this....

FOH with that Cole is trying to appeal to a mos def, common, talib kweli, nas crowd. Do you really think those niggas put out music with the intent of "Let me put out this CD thats only going to appeal to about oh 1/16th of the casual market, go double cotton swab, but will be critically acclaimed". Fuck no. Those nigga were trying their best to sell records just as much as Jay, Lil wayne or whoever.

My overall point is that you don't try to create a small but dedicated fanbase. The music does that for you. But first, the music has to be released.

@ the end of the day J Cole had a hit .. IN THE MORNIN ... he didnt drop it ... but i think it was strategic ... cause if he did drop that like how he dropped WHO DAT .... people would keep wanting IN THE MORNINGs from him like hes drake or something ... listening to his "body of work" 50 cent voice lol .... IN THE MORNINGs dont seem to be the tracks hes out to make ...... but thats just my observation .... he didnt want to get boxed in early ...... cause IN THE MORNING would of got dude in the building if he dropped it as a single wit all the marketing money behind it like he did WHO DAT .......... either he fucked up on it .... or he just didnt want to go that route so early in his career .......

I feel you but in today's game it's better to be boxed in then be outside living out of box. In order to get some radio blow he's gonna have to drop a radio friendly track catered toward the females. If you got that already with Drake on the track then you might as well push that. Made a video and shit might aswell give it a major push. Can we name any recent hits that weren't on some female or hit the club type of shit that came from a new comer that got major burn? And after you get more radio play, more interviews, and more chances to get your shit heard you drop some other singles that you feel better represent your message.

Nas does it on purpose. He could easily get J Blaze, Kayne, Dre, Premo, Large Professor, Pete Rock etc. to make beats and people would buy it just because. He just chooses not to for whatever reason. I.e. "Making hits is easy, put a famous bitch on the hook, there you go with a platinum cd." or "Y'all can keep your weak beats from your corny producers."

The rest of them just make what they view as real music. If people buy it, good, if they don't, oh well. Most of them are part-time actors anyways. Also, Talib is the only one who doesn't sell well. Every time Mos drops he goes around 200k on an indie, Common goes around gold, and Nas goes gold or platinum.

Career-wise, cosign. Skill-wise, HELL NO! Papoose is way better than average Cole.

Apparently he's supporting Tinie Tempah over here in the UK in November as a special guest... actually makes me want to go see it. Knowing my luck it'll sell out as soon as I can afford to buy it; I missed out on going to see him with Drake just as I went to buy it.

I think it's fair enough that he's trying to build a fanbase but I don't know, I hope he just gets on with making some material. He's said for a while he's been waiting for the right track for Jay-Z to feature on and I think if he had that extra spark he might be able to create one where the pair can rap whilst having that wow about it. The problem is that it's taking a long time.

Either way, I hope whatever he releases turns out to be good. I'll wait.
