If kanye west was to say he is going to retire on his twitter account right now hip hop would be fucking boring after he leaves I swear.

You would've had a case if he said that after graduation... Now I'm not so sure
If he took time off and went back to just producing I'm sure he would be more appreciated tho...

If Kanye is in that "greatest" convo then so is Commom, Redman, Black Thought, Pharoah Monch and so many more. As a matter of fact those I just listed are far superior MC's.

I will cosign this thread when I listen to his next solo album

I like him more as a producer though than a rapper

He has good witty lines in his flow, I'll give him that

People are making Kanye more than what he is... Dude is talented but that's where it stops

I was a fan of Kanye when I heard him on JayZs BP2... So I can say I'm a fan since the beginning I guess...

Just because he always goes left when Hip Hop goes right doesn't mean we should always applaud him

Im starting to think if Kanye was to have a Shakespeare theme on his next album niggas will call him a genius again...smh

Blame these white hipster critics.

White hipsters call Kanye Hip-Hops first genius so all these other fools lap it up and run with it.

In reality what is really genius about him, is he the first artist to combine rapping and producing? No

Is he the first rapper to have a few good albums? No

Then really what is all the clamor about, if Kanye is a genius then what is Q-Tip, RZA, Dr Dre, Erick Sermon?

Kanye is the most important figure in Hip Hop musically/artistically since maybe NWA . He brought life to the genre . Added at least 15 years to Jay-Z career ( A Legend ) . Help bring Twista to the mainstream . Jamie Foxx , John Legend . Common's career was rejuvenated with the help of Kanye . No he is not a top 5 rapper but he is a very good rapper and the musical aspect of his artistry sets him apart . Kanye is greater that just a rapper . Jay , Nas , Pac etc . And those guys are GOAT rappers . But thats the prob they are just rappers But Kanye is a far better artist because of his ability to make music and the diversity of the kind of music he produces. Its like comparing Stevie Wonder to Avant . Real Talk . Yea Avant is a singer , so is Stevie . But Stevie is a drummer , pianist . songwriter , experimental with sounds , producer etc etc etc . There are things that are unique to Hip Hop yes , But what is not unique to Hip Hop is that its MUSIC . And to be respected by musicians Hip Hop needs to have more niggas that do more than rap . Just my opinion

Stupid stupid post.

How exactly did he bring Hip- Hop to life?

How can he be the most important figure since NWA, when the likes of RZA, Pete Rock and Premo came into prominence after that period?]

Lets break this down a little more.

Theres is a bunch of rap artists you can say brought in a new era in Rap or made a load of rappers careers.

What about Q-Tip who produced classic cuts on Illmatic, The Infamous, and even helped with production on MBDTF and Watch The Throne. Also co producing albums for Jazz arists going to new artists heights that Kanye has yet to reached. All this while having been one of the main members in one of the biggest and influential groups in Rap history, pioneering an era thats influence is still apparent to see today , in the likes of Mr Kanye West himself

What about RZA, the pioneer behind the greatest and most influential rap group of the 90's, and producer of all the classic albums that came out the camp, Supreme Clientele, Liquid Swords, Ironman, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, and the list goes on, the producer who Kanye himself said he bit from.

How is Kanye more important than them?

Also to get to your point, Kanye is a bettter artist than Nas, Pac, Biggie yes, because he can produce, but then again so is Q-Tip, so is Erick Sermon, heck one could say so is Dr Dre. Yet that is not the argument, to be put in conversation with the likes of Nas and Jay, you have to be a great rapper, something Kanye is clearly not, so save all that artistry bullshit for another conversation, because this is not the time to bring that shit up.

And you don't get no points for diversity when it isn't executed in the correct way, i don't know how many times i have to say this. Kanyes worst album is coincidentally the most left field one in 808's, a truly below par album, yet people want to just give him credit for at least trying./

I have him 11th on my all time list. The ten guys ahed of him

Jay, Nas, Biggie, Rakim, Pac, Scarface, Ice Cube, Eminem, Krs-one, Andre 3000.

I think Kanye will be top ten when it's all said and done but i have a hard time putting him there right now.

He shits on LL though. I got into a huge agrument with my older cousin for putting Kanye over LL, but LLs catalog is fucking atrocious.

If You dont agree with my notion I can respect that, but calling it stupid , come on son .

Kanye did give life to the genre you have to admit that . I also lean towards artist like Q-TIP , RZA ( Producer Rappers ) . I feel that Kanye should be par for the course not standout the way he does . Meaning that Hip Hop artist should do more producing , instrument playing and exude more musicianship in their music . This brings the genre up as a whole. I do feel artist like Q-Tip and Rza and Mos Def and 3000 are better MUSICALLY as a whole than Nas , Jay , Pac etc because of their ability to not only produce but the ability to create the music and artistic vision for their projects . Yes a Nas can have a vision of what he would like his album to sound and feel like but he has to have someone else create that for him sonically.

When I speak of Kanye and his diversity, I am speaking more of his production ( even tho 808 wasnt a classic but it wasnt wack ) . Having the ability to go from Scarface to John Legend to Alicia Keys to Common show a array of diversity when it come to production . Like I said Kanye should be par for the course but due to the fact that Hip Hop doesnt have a boat load of artist that bring the talent to the table like Kanye does he stands out . Donnie Hathaway is viewed as a Legend now and one of his songs can make 40 Hip Hop tracks , but when he was alive he was an average artist of that time because of the Stevie, Marvin Gaye's, EWF , Tower of Power , Parliament , etc etc etc .Why cant Hip Hop be the same way ? Have a genre of artist with extreme talent , But again its just my opinion
