The part you're sorely missing is, they played their part and had talent. Cube might not have been a gang banger however, his contribution to Hip Hop wasn't his ability to shoot a gun. It was his ability to WRTIE rhymes and bring attention to situations that were affecting BLACKS across America. Pac and Biggie were simply PAWNS in the game.
