Nah thats pretty acurate.

He also dropped stillmatic and then meh albums until life is good

Thats a good 11 years. 10 if you count lost tapes .

It Was Written was a hot album and that was 2 yrs after Illmatic.

Jay-Z played himself too cause there are interviews and stories from their peers that corroborate that Jay was on Nas' dick during that IWW period. Wanting him in RD music videos and to make songs together and everything.

If son was already wack why sweat him so much after he "fell off"?

When Jay-Z spit that line he knew he was catering to cats in the hood that actually felt that way. In the context of his dealings with Nas though it sounded like a scorned wife going "his dick was too little" about her ex way after the fact.

Anyone remember when it first came on the radio?

your reaction?

I was parking my 91 toyata tercel in my back yard. They played it back a couple times. I remember finding the "hawaiin shirts" line hilarious, then realized I was rocking a bunch of them shits at the time....fucking ether

I also remember That the tone of the diss really stood out to me. I had never heard anything like it. It was like nas wasn't mad or angry about jay fucking his baby mom's or saying foul shit about him. It was this dark disappointment and little homey scolding...i thought that was brilliant and ultimately what gave nas the W, also the sing was good

Never caught the Ether hype. Yea the song was ok and Nas said a lot of funny shit about Jay but it was like he was just playing the dozens and joanin on him. Takeover was the better song and Jay spit more factual shit

That's kind of the point of a rap battle ace.

Jay-Z did the same shit.

Also Jay spit way more subjective shit than facts in Takeover. Just because you agreed with some of his opinions it doesn't make them fact.

I like Takeover more than Ether but people have to keep it one hunnid.

the bolded is gospal

Gospal huh? #THIW

Yep.

Illmatic, IWW, Stillmatic, God’s Son, Lost Tapes...

Nothing close to a 10 year stretch without a “hot album”

You could instantly feel the momentum in hip hop shift underneath your feet! It felt like Sting coming back in 1997 and winning the belt. Roc was the NWO and Jay Z was Hollywood Hogan. Them niggas were kicking ass in style everywhere and dominating in 2000-2001. Jay Z was really not losing at this time. Ruff Ryders, Lox, Prodigy, Jayo, Bravehearts, Ja Rule all tried to slow down the machine but couldnt stop the roc completely. The diamond signs, the dame dances, the bragging about money was taunting to the hip hop crowd. The day when the roc took over hot 97 was like doomsday. Rap got ambushed bad that day. I aint gonna lie. I was worried about Prodigy and Nas because Jay Z did not take his foot of they neck. Jay Z really felt like a rap dictator that day SP and ROC clapped up everybody. Yes Jada and Lox was fighting back but Beans was the muscle that kept ROC from getting KO'd. Nas was really the last hope

Ether dropped. Just like Harlem2thumbs said when you heard that gunfire and pac say "FUCK JAY Z" your attention was automatically drawn in. Nobody knew where Nas was going to attack from. Nobody. Ether caught the world off guard. I maybe told this story millions of times but fuck it. we were piled up deep in the University of Texas student library listening to this shit on a monday morning. Everybody jaw dropped to the floor after each line and verse. I distinctly remember multiple niggas saying oooh shit and jumping out of they seat pumpin they fist when Nas started the "ROC get gunned up and clapped quick" line Niggas played ether over and over waking niggas up out they dorm to come to the library and listen. The rap blogs and websites were on fire. I had an english paper i was supposed to type that morning. I did not even go to class i stayed in library all day listening to ether Yahoo Messaging with my niggas from the Stillmatic board talking about the beef. Jay Z fans looked SICK and let down I honestly think this where some of them went from casual fans into Jigga Warriors because they had a whole lot of crow and shit to eat after ether. One of our dormmates played ball for UT and was a huge Jay Z fan. Even met him months prior at the Blueprint 1 tour. Used to always make fun of anyone that was a Mobb Deep or Nas fan. Big homie looked crushed in the library listening to ether. Skipped practice and went to go lay back down at the dorm. He did not want to talk about Ether at all and never did

My point is Nas has never had a “one hot album every 10 year average”, and definitely not before Takeover.
