No hiphop album is a top 10 music album.

However, Public Enemy's 'It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back' may be the single most influential hiphop album and worthy of discussion.

True! And besides obvious funk influences, it's essential hip-hop album . No other album of genre could compete with other classics in terms of longevity, impact and greatness. It didn't change the game, it changed the music.

I know people in here based on personal opinion but in actuality the only 2 albums for a fact that are claimed as top albums and thats The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill & Speakerboxx/ Love Below mostly because of how across the board they were. Both were highly acclaimed and recieved Album of the Year Grammys. I know all you hip hop cats say a Grammy don't mean shit in hip hop BUT for your album to be given the award for the #1 album in ALL genres says a ton!!!

Why do we have to hate hiphop to be able to appreciate other genres of music.....I love music period.....I dont fuck with country (or variations of it.. ie: blue grass..folk music) and a lot of 2days pop shit.....but I'm a music lover period....

As am I....

Honestly I think hip hop as a genre is as good as funk or rock and roll I don't think its fully appreciated yet and like nas said its still in its infant stages we won't know who made the best cd or who the best rApper was till about 15 years from now. What I can say about it is its the most intricate and creative genre of music ever created. Just look how many variations there are of rhyme schemes.

Yall niggas kill me with that "Illmatic" shit.... It was a good album but not as good as people make it out to be.

If there's any rap album that I think the "Music Community" would say is in the "Top Ten Albums of all Time" it would have to be....

Public Enemy's "It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back"...

But I still say the Dopest "Hip Hop" album ever made was Dr Dre's "The Chronic"...

lol @ Illmatic though. Nobody outside of hip hop heads heard that shit. so its either The Mised, S/LB, or the Score, Because Eminem is wack as fuck

Let's take a look at the top 20... expand it a bit...

1 Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band The Beatles 1967
2 Pet Sounds Beach Boys 1966
3 Revolver The Beatles 1966
4 Highway 61 Revisited Bob Dylan 1965
5 Rubber Soul The Beatles 1965
6 What's Going On Marvin Gaye 1971
7 Exile On Main St. Rolling Stones 1972
8 London Calling The Clash 1979
9 Blonde On Blonde Bob Dylan 1966
10 The Beatles (The White Album) The Beatles 1968

11 The Sun Sessions Elvis Presley 1976
12 Kind Of Blue Miles Davis 1959
13 Velvet Underground & Nico Velvet Underground 1967
14 Abbey Road The Beatles 1969
15 Are You Experienced? Jimi Hendrix Experience 1967
16 Blood On The Tracks Bob Dylan 1975
17 Nevermind Nirvana 1991
18 Born To Run Bruce Springsteen 1975
19 Astral Weeks Van Morrison 1968
20 Thriller Michael Jackson 1982

The only album I can see in this company is It Takes A Nation of Millions... Why? Because of the impact it had (realistically, it's better suited as Top 50). I love the passion we have for Nas, Outkast, Lauryn, but the albums mentioned just aren't in Top 10 or Top 20. There are other CLASSIC albums from other genres (Off The Wall, Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life, Dark Side of the Moon, Electric Ladyland, Bitches Brew, Led Zeppelin 1, Purple Rain among MANY others) that didn't make the top 20. .

I think there are hiphop albums that deserve to be in the Top 100 discussion (meaning you can make an argument but they're not necessarily top 100). They include The Chronic, Paid in Full, RUN DMC Raising Hell, Ready to Die, Doggystyle, Reasonable Doubt, Straight Outta Compton, Amerikkkas Most Wanted, Miseducation, Aquemini, 36 Chambers, The Score, All Eyez on Me, TMMLP, All Eyez On Me, LL's Radio.... Again, we can make an argument for top 100 maybe... but top 10 is just unrealistic in my opinion.

for me there is something about reasonable doubt that consistently draws me in.

it's my favorite album of all time, even though jay isn't even my favorite rapper.

IMO, only the chronic, doggy style, and it takes a nation are the only candidates at this point.

Me against the world is to me the greatest album ever, and I don't think it would come close.

Then again there are more updated rock albums that should be up there. This a more modern list to me. I made it up, based on their shit ive seen

1. Thriller
2. Sgt peppers
3. The eagles
4. Nirvana
5. Pearl jam
6. Led zeppelin
7. The chronic
8. It takes a nation
9. Radio head
10. Pink Floyd

I'm not even gonna jump to assumptions, but how many hip hop fans are even listening to a wide variety: how many have even heard these, Rolling Stone's top 10. To even base your argument.

10. Beatles - White Album

9. Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde

8. The Clash - London Calling

7. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street

6. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

5. The Beatles - Rubber Soul

4. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

3. The Beatles - Revolver

2. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

1. The Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club

Lol I'm ashamed that I've only heard one in its entirety though I do love songs from a couple. I gotta listen to at least the top 50.

It's debatable that most hip hop albums could even compete musically, since much of it is sampling older music.

Ive listened to a majority of those albums and I can truthly say that there are some hiphop albums tht should be spoken about in the same breath, one them being Illmatic and The Chronic which pretty much defined almost 20 years of a damn culture.
