According to usmarine, dude has a hit record out right now. I've still yet to hear it outside of the internet, but usmarine seems to think that the few girls he knows that say they like it means that its a hit and everybody else in the rest of the country like it too. Bwahahahahahaha

Whoa...dont let usmarine see that. He swears J.Cole's buzz is as big as Drake's in 09/10, Wayne in 08, and Kanye's around 04. How dare you say no one knows dude. He talks to girls on his lil college campus and they love his music. Certainly they must represent a large # of people. LMMFAO!!!

As for the thread, why are yall niggas so fixated with his release date or him being thrown out there for the fuck of it. Can the nigga actually build a fanbase so he don't pull a Wacka Flocka (big singles and album flops because he has no real fans), believe it or not some niggas actually believe in artist development. Yall niggas on that instant gratification shit, most niggas don't have that Drake, 50, Snoop type start of their careers.

I think how Drake became successful is setting a lot of guys back. Execs peep game and copy. Drake blew up off his music alone. Before a major push and major promotion Best I Ever had just blew up and made him. When you look at for real Drake didn't need super backing and super push b/c he had smash singles. Since then it's like labels are telling there young acts to put out mixtapes til you get a hit single off the mixtape then we will push you and give you a real budget and release date. I think that's what is happening with Cole. I mean i love big krit too but is he ever getting a release date? Just like i doubt interscope will push Wale again. this is how it is in the downloading age of record companies on a major. None of these dudes are getting release dates b/c none of them have put out a real hit single. We all gonna see Willow smith flying right past them dudes.

OK I can get with this. If Hov can bring artist development for rappers back to the majors? he shall become even more legendary than he already is.

The thing is you see it as building a fan base, while i see it as the label isn't putting his shit out til he has a hit. That's how they want him to build a fan base. Maybe I'm wrong but time will tell. I just think at some point just release the guy's music. He makes great music but when you on a major it's not about that for real. and right now he's caught up in the major label shuffle. I'm not sure if his album isn't ready or if the label is just holding him up.

I think it's a combo of both, fanbase and hit single, it's a timing thing. Fanbase is more important, because this dude is touring and selling out decent size events for a nigga with one official single, it's a matter of releasing that single he has with Trey Songz now and grabbing that mainstream audience. This whole idea that a big single is the end all be all is fucking false, look at niggas like Gucci, Wacka, etc all over the radio and bricking when their albums get released and look at niggas like Kid Cudi with no video and no massive singles putting up numbers.

Fanbase > Chart position imo

I've always been of the motto that slow and steady>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Most niggas like Drake, Nelly, DMX, 50,etc who start off fast generally burn out 5 albums in.

what music does he have to release? Who Dat had moderate success but he still hasn't have and doesn't really have a "radio single"...hell Wiz Khalifa got Black & Yellow playing all over the country and he still says he's not rushing his album's release because he doesn't want to just try and turn in some half assed album just to capitalize off the success of one song...J. Cole doesn't even have that "one song" yet and niggas still don't understand why there's no album release date...yes he's nice as hell but as of NOW he doesn't have that appeal that would get the type of success that would convince the label to put money into him...

its todays market believe it or not alot of the replies in this thread are the way niggas really think, its bazillions of other rap niggas ready to take the nigga spot if he doesnt drop. niggas today dont have the attention span or will to stick wit a nigga like that.

It's not the end all be all dude, the labels make money off touring too and other ventures. For god sakes, within the last two years, there has been less than 5 platinum rappers, that alone should let you know these labels have shifted the business model from album sales to other things.
