If a rapper/group comes up with a new style or something different people tend to say, "Its all Hip Hop". Generally speaking people from other regions outside of New York (South, Midwest, West Coast) defend their local groups. If somebody says, "well that's not really Hip Hop" or, "Thats not the traditional Boom Bap sound" people are quick to say, "Its all Hip Hop".
But is that really true?
1. Is Bobby Shmurda dancing on the table Hip Hop?
2. Is D-12's My Band Hip Hop?
3. Is Young Thug's Westwood freestyle Hip Hop?
4. Was LL's Accidental Racist Hip Hop?
5. Is Macklemore Hip Hop?
6. When these new rappers rap over beats that are d'void of Boom Bap and are just 808, synth and hi hats, is that really Hip Hop or is it something else?
For that matter, if Hip Hop has a certain sound and starts to change and evolve, at what point is it no longer Hip Hop?
1. Paid In Full
2. It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
3. Straight Outta Compton
4. Illmatic
5. Ready To Die
6. Doggystyle
7. All Eyes On Me
8. Only Built For Cuban Linx
9. Reasonable Doubt
10. Ghetto D
^^^ Those aren't necessarily my top 10 albums but I think we can all agree that those albums are a good representation of what Hip Hop should sound like. Or stated another way, if you were going to make a time capsule and send it forward 100 years into the future, those 10 albums would be a good representation of what we consider Hip Hop music.
My question is; If you make music that doesn't sound anything like those 10 albums, is it Hip Hop or is it something else?
I'll leave you with this. Its the trailer for a movie that came out in 1985 called Rappin. In theory, its a Hip Hop movie about Rapping. But just by watching the trailer its debatable if this is really Hip Hop or something else masquerading as Hip Hop.

And like anything hip hop has evolved from the origins the same way everything else does so no it is not all hip hop but everyone's definition of hip hop is different

For example, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, The Beastie Boys and Public Enemy were all inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. Many traditional rock musicians said that they don't belong in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame because they're not Rock N Roll. They have a good point IMO. You could make a very solid argument that those groups don't belong in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.
Likewise, when the Hip Hop Hall of Fame gets built are we gonna let everybody in who has ever rapped over a beat and sold a million units or will there be some criteria? In 20 years should Macklemore and Young Thug be inducted into the Hip Hop Hall of Fame?

If this hip hop hall of fame gets built then by your logic acts like Bone Thugs, Outkast, Eminem, Three 6 Mafia, & boatloads more wouldn't fit your "criteria". Many acts that came with they're own sound and style that set trends & left they're mark on hip hop MUSIC and CULTURE. I don't think that's gonna fly homie.

So how about Macklemore? He won the grammy for best rapper. Should he be inducted to the Hip Hop Hall of Fame or should somebody take a stand and say, "Thats Not Hip Hop"?
I have plenty of other examples but does anybody understand where I'm coming from or am I alone on this?
