When i judge a rapper i just technical abilities, catalog, and impact. I think he check the box more than any other rapper imo. To me Jay and Dre got the strongest lineage in rap as far as who they put on or influenced.

The only person Jay really most definitely put on was Bleek, Source Money and Cole. And only one of them had a good career. Everybody else it was Dame. Jay didn't discover Jeezy, or Ross. Nas put Cormega, Nature, Natshawn, AZ , Wiz and Jungle,Quan and the first to work with Ameri. And lets not forget Dave East.

Someone in the 4:44 thread mentioned how Jay was never the best rapper at anytime during his career, I brushed it off and then gave it some serious thought and it was a somewhat valid point. I don't think jay is the best rapper or even top 3, however he has been the most consistent and had the most longevity of any artist dead or alive.

Put it this way, biggie made jay-z seem average and jay was and obviously still is an excellent rapper. To me, biggie was the best rapper that ever lived, but 2pac was my favorite, mostly due to content and the way he delivered his vocals.

Ross himself said Jay and LA Reid put him on.

It's gotta be Jay. I haven't even listened to 4:44 yet, but the man puts out great/amazing albums.....with the exception of Kingdom Come and Vol. 2 (a few good songs but nothing special honestly but I know I am in the minority on that one).

And based on what I am hearing about the new album, old man is still going.

Ross had a deal with Slip n Slid first. I believe Bleek brought him to their attention. Jay didn't get on a Ross record and make it hot as a first single. And he didn't feature Ross on his record to introduce him to the public. Ross made himself a star with hard work.

Just Blaze is a producer. That shit don't count. Plus he did records with other rapper before Jay. Kanye brought Lupe out to the world on Touch the sky. But Lupe had a deal already to be honest. Jay didn't put him on either. Dame put Ye on not Jay. Jay had nothing to do with that album. But he did put on Ja Rule.

Put on mean to break the artist to the world or the first to sign them right?

Cosign everything but that.

Him putting anybody on dont really got nothing to do with him as far as what he's put out. In a way it would kinda be a testament to dude being able to hold his own to not be all about other rappers. If he aint put anybody on that wouldnt hurt his case for what he's put out. So considering his career is there really anything anyone can really say against it? As far as if you dont consider him the greatest, there is undeniable accomplishments. That objectively put him in the convo if not in that spot.

Master P put on 10X more people than anybody else but it doesn't make him the GOAT MC.

JAY-Z is the greatest rapper to do it... his career is unmatched and the longevity speaks for itself, it's a wrap sorry B.I.G. & 2Pac... he had maybe 2 lackluster albums that by today's standards would be the best shyt out today

Yeah. two different things. If the convo was business man and someone who put on a lot of rappers, there is a great case for Master P. But greatest rappers, thats a discussion that I dont see any way Jay z isnt in that discussion. Even though I dont necessarily agree he is number one, its not like saying so is off. He's achieved a place in very exclusive company.

I don't think anybody denies that Jay is in the GROAT discussion. A lot of people just don't feel he's the hands down winner as some claim. Just for me, it's telling when so many factors that have nothing to do with rap are being used to justify his status. Like what does putting on other rappers even have to do with how good you can rap?

Its like I just cant just give him that #1 status. Ironically, his consistency and longevity may be a big part of it. The fact he's still out and hi music isnt so exclusive and songs from him arent so rare. In hind site, at some point in the future maybe looking back would be a different perspective for people. But even then, do people say Michealangelo was "greater" than Davinci, etc? Not really there may be preferences but they are basically viewed on their own merits not as a competition. So who knows. Was Beethoven "greater" than Bach? Doesnt really matter. I dont even think too many people even think in those terms. Not going to try to downplay what he's managed to do though so I can understand someone thinking he is if thats their particular opinion.

Able to hold his own? The album in discussion is his highest seller Ever!… 14 songs 12 of which had features only 2 solos 1 witch was a sample wit a hook already on it… ride or die & alright are the only solo jay songs on vol 2
