If that really is the explanation, then I'll agree that it is not smart as far as networking in the industry.

With the industry simultaneously becoming more centralized (around a few big name artists) and more decentralized (with the rise of the internet and bottom up marketing), perhaps there is a bit of a tradeoff: publicity vs networking. Gibbs is in a camp so it isn't like he's going it alone (which is good imo, he doesn't have the charisma to carry himself to the top), at the same time he's getting the fans attention with all the shit talking. Imo it is an okay strategy overall IF he can produce a genuine hit record very soon. Otherwise he risks being blackballed.
