What was the best album in 08, Paper Trail lol? There have been plenty of years with weaker top albums than the top albums of '14.

I see this thread EVERY FUCKIN YEAR!!!. Some of yall need to get a preference and STICK TO IT!!!! I dont do radio, or MTV Jams and get all the music that I LIKE and don't pay attention to the rest......Ever since I did that i enjoy hip hop a whole lot better.

BOOM

The question isn't whether or not there are dope rappers out now. The question to me is the fact that the perception of hip hop is loosely based on what's going on in the mainstream. That perception could change if the mainstream changes who and what they push. There are too many people not seeing the forest from the trees. It's not the fact that you can look for dope hip hop. It's just an indictment on how far things have fallen that the ONLY way to get decent shit is if you go look for it. And yall are in here saying that as if it's a positive, or it makes you a better fan, or it makes it right. Like I said before I look for shit that I like, but that's only because I have no choice. There is a bigger picture to this shit.

There are just so many layers to this shit but you've begun to hit on another point.

I'm not buyin' it. I think some of you are in here downplaying the argument like it's old man Jamar bitchin' again about these young niggas on his lawn, when he isn't even the one who brought it up. Vlad did, and the point is valid. IC niggas were saying this back in July. 2014 has been terrible.

No one was saying this in 2013 with all the shit we had. 2013 was an epic year, and I can go back to previous threads to prove it.

2012 had arguably one of the greatest Hip-Hop albums in the past decade (GKMC). That alone makes it better then 2014. Amongst others like Live fro the Underground, DC2 (one of Meek's best work according to the IC), fucking Ab's Control System? Stoned Immaculate?

2011 was the Watch the Throne era B. On top of that? Take Care. Rocky dropped his breaking mixtape, Kendrick dropped Section 80, Currensy dropped Covert Coup. The Weeknd was bubbling. 2011 was a mixtape year nigga.

2010 had Kush and OJ B. Kush and fucking OJ had college campuses blazed. MBDTF from Ye as well? Works of art. Flockaveli had the streets in flames.

And I'm just mentioning the music that had significant impacts on the culture. Not even touching on the BS press the game has gotten in 2014. Not even talking about all the other hot mixtapes that came out.

Cilvia was dope. Black Hystori was historic. But those handfuls of saving grace are not adding up to work we've seen in the previous 5 years, let alone 10. Keep in mind what we were promised in 2013 for 2014. And look at what we actually got.

Bruh are we gonna act like NaS a revered (if not the most revered) HipHop artiste didn't start up a record label signing these musicians you speak about? You know them niggas that don't get no radio play or mainstream affection?

Is he not doing his bit?

HipHop has a culture of "crate digging" you know. Find shit YOU like and appreciate. Shit done changed.. . It ain't and never will be the 90s again

2008...

T.I.-Paper Trail

Lil Wayne-Carter III

Kanye West-808s and Heartbreak

Rick Ross-Trilla

Nas-Untitled

The Game-LAX

Young Jeezy-The Recession

Bun B-II Trill

Snoop Dogg-Ego Trippin

G-Unit-T.O.S.

Again not calling it a goat year but definitely better then this year and I haven't even been naming underground/mix tapes...you're gonna have to really dig to find a worse year and I'm not even saying this year has been trash...just becuz something is considered the worse shouldn't just automatically mean it's trash

Now how many of those artists on Mass Appeal are getting that push? I appreciate what Nas is trying to do and it's dope. But they're not getting the push. I'm tired of hearing about all these dope artists they need to get pushed. That will change hip hop for the better.

Crate digging was about finding obscure songs to sample.

Eh it's a bit organic now

Back in 2010 one cold night, @RuffDraft a former MOD on this sub-forum introduced me to this talented kid called Kendrick Lamar and a tape he'd released at the time. That was on The Essence forum.. .

I copped it than downloading freely and I became a fan instantly.

Today Lamar is this huge popular Grammy nominated platinum selling artiste who dropped a critically acclaimed album 2 years ago.. . I'm still a fan

And "crate digging" can still apply to finding newer and talented acts.

I did buy KRIT's album and I'll probably buy the new Wu and Ghost albums, so that's three albums I'll have bought this year. I think there has been at least one year where I didn't think anything was worth getting, so that year was worse.
