I agree and disagree.
Pimp C. has one of this thickest southern drawls of all time but people respect him for his mouthpiece in spite of his accent.
Big Boi and Andre 3000 have never had their intelligence questioned despite their southern accents.
T.I. has that ATL accent too, but you rarely hear people debating about his level of education.
Some people actually think Gucci Mane has a mental disability, just click this link:

You can hear consciousness in a southern drawl when its Cee-Lo or Killer Mike and their behavior outside the booth matches their consciousness.
A parallel comparison would be Mykelti Williams character
"Bubba" from the movie
"Forrest Gump"...the character Bubba had the same under-bite that Gucci Mane does and was from Alabama just like Gucci Mane.
The subliminal character imprint on peoples subconscious may cause them to associate
Gucci with "
Bubba" ........

^^^^^The shrimp dialogue inspired the song "Lemonade"
Why did the actor use an under-bite effect and jut out his lower-jaw to feign inferior intelligence??
My point is that
appearance and
behavior in addition to a southern accent can influence peoples perception more than just the accent alone.
