Troy Polamalu is the single-most important piece in a HISTORIC defense. From 2007-10 the Steelers defense has been - without question - the league's best defense finishing first in yards and/or points FIVE times. Over that span they've reached 2 Super Bowls and won one of them. In one of those seasons they did it with a paultry offense where the QB went 18/14(IIRC) and the Halfback averaged a mere 3.9 YPC on some 300+ carries...
Without Polamalu the Steelers defense would've been a good one. With him they have been a HISTORIC one. The Eagles defense was never a historic one despite much talent such as Sheldon Brown, Lito Sheppard, Trent Cole, Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent, Jeremiah Trotter, Al Harris, Hugh Douglass, Hollis Thomas, Corey Simon, Michael Lewis, Derrick Burgess, Jevon Kearse, Darwin Walker...
Troy impacts the way quarterbacks must approach the play in a way that only Reed can match. Polamalu is the better player on a grand scale, i don't care how great of a leader Dawkins was. He was the inferior player in an impacting the game way.
