I'm tired of the old Legendary rappers gettin way more credit than they deserve...!

Have you ever heard Jay and B.I.G. on a track together, have you noticed how many lyrics Jay borrowed for Biggie??? I get how some people say B.I.G. can't be the G.O.A.T. cause of longevity but that most be some new shit, I can pick anyone one of B.I.G.'s songs out and it still knocks. My G.O.A.T. don't have to be your choice but give respect where respect is due. They called Bigge the greatest rapper alive when he was living not after he passed. Pun was working on being in that top five while alive and imo the one of the best rappers alive today didnt pop up on this board once Black Thought destroys anyone he is on a track with.

Wow! This is one of the problems w/Hip-Hop, we don't honor, respect and learn from our history. Young rock and rollers put many of the legends in their top 5 cause they respect and are taught their history. But Hip-Hoppers and black folk are for now!

To the one who created this post and those that agree with it, I ask you to open up your mind, purchase a Rakim, KG Rap, Big Pun or Big Daddy Album (i can go on and on), throw some headphones on and listen to what they are saying. U may change your mind after u come back off the trip they take you on.

I am ashamed at All Hip-Hop for making this a main thread? Unreal...

And Jay Z is 41 years old btw!

In closing, Hip-Hop may not be where it is at today if not for the doors RunDMC opened up! And NOONE gave a stage performance like RunDMC! No one ever!

That old shit has no replay value and has bland ass production.

They shit usually sound better in a Kanye sample anyways.

Its fucking ridiculous how much more love rappers like Rakim, Kool Mo Dee, KRs1, BDK, Big Pun (wack!), Biggie (overrated)!, RUN DMC (....wiggedy wack), even Sugar Hill Gang & niggas like that who really weren't even that nice get mad props for GOAT status... over Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem, Kanye, even a T.I. or Wayne who have dominated this era of true competition and revolutionized Rap music as much if not more than any of them niggas... I don't want to hurt any of yall old heads but its truth almost all them niggas couldn't hang in today's rap or have even made as much quality music as a Jay or Kanye.. But its like hip hop fans never wanna give just due to our rappers which is just unfair...

Half them old niggas (or Dead niggas) are still tryna rap and aint been looked out for about 15 years... but people have the nerve to say Jay-Z or Em has to do more to pass them niggas when if you compare lyric wise and what not are killing off them old heads... I'm sure yall understand where I'm getting at... Its cool if you a legend and u were here first but that shyt don't mean players who have shown and proved consistently haven't passed up them niggas... The old and the dead are getting way too much credit now and it needs to end!

WOW...i know its ur opinion but damn seriously....biggie overated...jus plain stupidest comment ever same about pun...lyrically just murderous...firstly who has ever said sugar hill gang and kool moe dee are GOATs, pioneers of maybe but GOATS no...when you talk about revolutionizing rap you do realise that 'wack' rappers like krs1 and run dmc brought rap to your tv and are more influential than many which is why they get props...another point it took lil wayne like 15 years before he even got noticed outside of the south, i like him but sometimes he's just got damn awful...could go on for ever but cant be arsed...so a few summary points...half of the old rappers you mentioned never had these weak ass filler records on their albums like they do today...i have mad love for jigga and em but imo they have got lazier lyrically since they first came out...finally rakim hands down one of the most lyrical geniuses of rap full stop...dont even reply to that comment

I would be lying if I said I heard every damn jon from Rakim, KRS1,KOOL G, BDK.... Im not even sayin them niggas is wack cuz I know Rakim aint wack but why do people put the old school on a pedastool (spellcheck) for greatness... People just vault them to the top of greatness when they really got pushed to the curb in hip hop... them niggas didnt retire they got stopped...Most them so called retired MCs still tryna rap and the people who consider them goats aint even checked out for them dudes in the last 20 years but they saying Jay or Em hasnt done enough... Its been proven that you cant kick Jay-Z out of the rap game... he took hisself out and reallly retired and came back , took the crown all over again... Rakim tried to come back with Aftermath and Dre dropped his ass.. u dig what I'm saying... I'm appreciative to hearthe RunDMC's and shyt like that but I would say that the Clipse or OutKast would bury them lyrically... Im just keeping it 100, not disrespecting

One reason is because WE were there to truly experience it. Something you didn't get a chance to do. You can listen to a old school RUN-DMC track and be like "Whatever". I can hear that same track and remember when it first played on the radio and checking the blocks reaction, saw the video, seen them perform live. You're 23 so by the time you turned six Nas just dropped his debut. You were 8 when Jay-z dropped his. Too many emcees dropped classics that you don't know anything about. Thats like me being 7 when Michael Jackson dropped THRILLER and saying fuck everything and every artist that's not him before that time !! A real music fan wouldn't do that. A real music fan CAN'T DO THAT. No one is saying that The Clipse, Heltah Skeltah, or Outkast doesn't blaze Run-DMC lyrically but they aren't gonna come out their mouth and disrespect the group that made them want to be a duo !! No way in Hell. You're dealing with early 80's vs mid 90's !! If you wasn't around at that time of Hip Hop, you can't really speak on it. Your mentality isn't there. Where as I can listen to a emcee today and compare them to the early emcees.

Why do people think Eminem is a gimmick. Em's just...Em. Oh and Jay-Z was shit on in Renegade.

Huh? Did you really just ask why people think Em is a gimmick? Is this hip-hop to you lol?

Jay, Pun (minus longevity dude died) and Em have most if not all those aspects...

Jay's style is not original, see Biggie, Big L, Young Chris etc. He can't perform on stage, he just stands in one place and rhyme. His storytelling is below average. He can't battle. His rhymes can't be used as poems. His catalog fell WAY OFF after TBA.

Em's style is not original. He hasn't been in the game for 15+years. His storytelling is trash. His rhymes can't be used as poems. His catalog is TERRIBLE.

Pun's style is not original. He's wack in all aspects of emceeing in comparison to the GOATs.

I said top 5 LYRICALLY. By general consensus, Nas is a top 5 lyricist.

Man for you making this thread proves one major thing to me..........that you young niggas are really lost!! how in the hell them guys get too much credit for a culture and skill that they created. for one not one of those guys sounded alike. They each had their own original style and you would be considered a biter (which most rappers are today) if you sound like the next man. rappers today have taken the soul out of hiphop and allow the white man to dictate the culture. Hiphop was the voice of the street......Young niggas like you really cant comment on hiphop. the shit you listen to today is pop music. Biggie Rakim krs one big pun would run circles around rappers today.....you dont know that because you dont understand

Lil wayne should never ever be put in the class as these guys. if you put dude lines on paper...that shit doesnt making any sense. Hip hop used to inspire and teach

I agree with you to a certain degree but what most people look at or used to look at when they decided who was the GOAT was the OVERALL IMPACT on the game that artist had. Think about the impact Big and Pac had to have to make 2 coast war against one another. Now dudes just beef and they just have their goons and thats it. It's forgotten in a week. Then you have to consider the fact that when you talk about who the GOAT the same names keep coming up. You cant argue that BIG, Pac, Rakim and even Jay-Z has impacted the industry to the point where no matter how old they get their music and contribution to the rap world will never be forgotten. Lil Wayne is a tight MC but if he was to quit today how did he impact the game? Is any of his music "classic"? It is my opinion that your greatnest is determined by your impact. BlackSheep wasnt the greatest but that one hit still gets the crowd jumping today because its a classic. Most songs made today last for a season than its played out. Ready To Die, Life After Death, Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, All of Tupac's music made a huge impact and thats why old heads and new jacks will consider them the GOAT.

So much narrowmindedness and borderline stupidity in this post...

rap IS poetry by the way

Greatness is measured by the Impact and legacy you leave. Granted, most of the old school artist cant match these new dudes lyrically (there are more than a few exceptions like Waka, Souljah Boy, Gucci Mane just to name a few) but LL Cool J proved that its not all about talent when he defeated Canibus, who is clearly the better MC but LL made a bigger impact. Wu Tang and NWA left marks in the industry that Young Money may never duplicate. Arguably, YM has the more modern MC's but Wu Tang and NWA will probably be considered better groups because of the impact they made on the industry. These new jacks will need to make their own history but because the market is flooded with MC's due to the now easy access to free promotion its hard to a legend now.

this threads on some funny shit. breaking down an art form and trying to put a science behind it. These people make music, you can hate on these artists all you want, its never going to take away what they've accomplished with their art. I would never deny that Jay-Z's one of the nicest out, but I would also never put his name above anyone else on my playlist. Music can't be ranked, it's not a competitive sport. Its about whether you as the listener, like it. Don't give the stuff you don't like a second thought. ENJOY THIS SHIT! leave the bullshit politics to the labels, we're the consumer.

and my tops are

Fashawn

Blu

Pun

ODB

Ill Bill.

no particular order.
