Think about that for a moment. More than 500 murders in 2012, and approximately 150 so far this year. 75% of the victims are Black. And most of it is Black on Black violence. Gang violence. Drug related violence. Crimes of passion. Crimes of opportunity.

While Chicago may not have the highest murder rate in the nation, it has the highest gross number of murders.

it would be nice to see this community express a similar degree of outrage and angst over the level of violence in Chicago.



Especially since so many of the victims are people of color.

it is somewhat true the devastation homicide inflicts on black teens and adults are somewhat "ignored" outside of affected communities. and while i'm sure some people feel as though its not their problem... i think the majority of blacks want an end to the violence even more so then justice for trayvon they just feel as though the violence within our communities is a long standing problem beyond fixing or the solution is out of their reach....and have become numb to it

sensible people know rallies like the ones where people were demanding justice for the martin family, aren't going to curb a complex issue such as black on black violence which has deep socioeconomic, cultural, and moral roots. that's accomplished through policy making. policies for example that call for sensible gun control to dam the flood of cheap guns into black communities and fall into the wrong hands

to jump start such initiatives require not only blacks to take a stand but whites too considering we make up such a small portion of the voting population. and over the years whites have repeatedly shown they largely don't care about the plight of the impoverished, the victims of the drug war, the state of our educational system, etc

also understand black people from every walk of life young and old can relate to being profiled simply because of the color of their skin and that's why narratives like trayvon martin's stir so many emotions. also because gz wasn't arrested until weeks after tm's death the case illuminates the underlying racist structure of this country such as the bias that lie within our criminal justice system (i.e. blacks fill up our prisons, black defendants receive harsher penalties then their white counterparts, defendants convicted of harming white victims suffer harsher penalties)

smh....wish people especially blacks would stop perpetuating the idea that somehow black people are cavalier about our self destruction. shit is just not true and does nothing to hep the situation
