I think he HAS to hold out. For the sake of every other football player in the league who outplays his contract. So, yeah I would hold out.

no, Chris Johnson holds no real leverage. if he's making ONLY 550K and the teams starts fining him 10K for every day of training camp he misses, then he could stand to lose over 1/4 of his base salary just from not showing up. And its not the Titans fault that his agent didn't get him a contract w/ incentives.

Since he can only receive a 30% increase from his current salary it's not worth it, but we all know Chris Johnson isn't intelligent.

30-percent rule restrictions

The 30-percent rule, found in Article XXIV, Section 8 (b) of the CBA, states that renegotiations/extensions entered into in the 2010 league year may not increase per year from 2009 to 2010 or beyond more than 30 percent of the 2009 salary. For example, if the 2009 salary is $2M, the maximum available in 2010 is $2.6M, in 2011 it’s $3.2M, etc.

The theory behind the rule was to prevent the dumping of disproportionate amounts of compensation into a year with no cap to regulate spending. The rule was another quid pro quo for what was expected to be an uncapped windfall for players.

lol @ alll the players holding out this year, not realizing that they have NO leverage.

In a recent interview with Michael Smith of ESPN, Chris Johnson was very mindful of the rule that states he must report to the Titans at least 30 days prior to the start of the regular season or lose a year credited to free agency.

"So [Johnson] could stage a brief holdout but doesn't want to be in more or less in the same position next year," Smith wrote on Twitter.

Translation: The Titans know Johnson must show up by August 10, so they don't have to worry much.

lol he has nothing working in his favor

I would give them a $550K year, very subpar and average... The Titans may have the leverage off the field, but Johnson has all the leverage on the field. The titans go as Chris Johnson goes.

I think they all know the rule.. I dont think they really care about the salary. They want that guaranteed money. The signing bonus has nothing to do with that rule (I think)

no, you are right, they can give him a new deal with a salary no more than 30% above his current salary, but they can just give him an enormous signing bonus. However that would be completely stupid for them to do because if he doesn't report to camp by August 10, he gets fined and will lose a year credited to free agency, meaning he will be an extra year away from becoming a free agent. So there is no reason for Ten. to pay hiim what he wants because they know he will show up anyway.

thats the thing, they may be getting the best bargain in all of sports right now, why give that up just to be nice? All he has to do is go out there and play like he has been and he will get a huge deal. Now maybe he wants to secure money now in case of injury, but from the Titans standpoint, they dont want to dump a bunch of guarenteed money to him and watch him break a leg.
