Jay quotes Big for a reason whether u agree with it or not he's influenced by him. Big didn't control Puff, Puff controlled Big so who Jay signs to has nothing to do with it. BadBoy was a brand new label just like Rocafella. Big was bigger than Jay-Z when he was alive and thats a fact Jay-Z being affiliated with Big helped launch his career.
