In the Bible, the prophets big & small all had to prove that what they were saying was by God's authority or that what they spoke was Truth. Jesus and the apostles included. These days, people who don't follow Christ and His word tend to just offer their own words and strange ideas that are often in opposition to what He taught. Neither is any proof of what they are saying is correct offered. THus, using the same standard of measurement the prophets of old were measured to, Christians are told not to believe those who do that.
