Africa is a beautiful continent that has many different cultures... it is hardly homogeneous.
I have been fortunate enough to spend time in Ghana, Burkina Faso, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Sudan, and Egypt over the years. The different experiences that I have had there and the people that I have met there have changed my life.
As a white person, I became used to being called "obroni" or "Mzungu" as it is more of a descriptive term than a slur or an insult. However, a few black guys from the States that I met during my travels used to get vexxed because the local Africans would call them that as well. Similar to calling someone an "oreo cookie", I guess... they would usually say it with a mischievous smile so I think the local African people were just trying to get a reaction from them for jokes.
I wish everyone who has the means to do it would travel to a few different places around the world and try to broaden their horizons. Try to travel outside of your comfort zone, as well. If your background is, for example, Scottish, and you live in the United States, sure it is cool to travel to Scotland to trace your roots and culture. But why not think outside the box and travel to China or India and try to immerse yourself in a culture completely different from your own. Don't just hang out there with other people travelling from your home country... try to get off the beaten path and see things through the lives of the local people.
CNN, Fox News, and the other major media outlets have sold you a lie about what is going on in the world.
Get out there and see the truth with your own eyes...
