Liberia and most of Africa was not as economically developed back then as they are today. There are plenty ways to invest some of that money over there today be well off. And Liberia failed because the Blacks who returned tried to rule the people who were already there amongst other things.

Im talking about going to Africa and being a part of the society, not trying to take over the country.
