Sunshine was basically 21 questions before 21 questions. I remember reading magazines ratings of Vol 1 back then (The Source, Blaze,Rap Pages, etc) and Jay got criticized alot for that album, i remember them criticizing him for making personal songs like (You must love me, Lucky Me,etc). Ironic isn't it, the same mfs who say he is shallow now were the same ones who shat on him back then when he got deeper.

@ bolded- Nahhh. Sunshine, to quote Beanie Sigel, was on some 'sappy beats...flutes and xylophones' type ish. It was 1) the SOUND of the song, and 2)the video..that made it a target, not the fact he was rappin to a chick.

@ Everythign else- that's not correct. They killed him for the upbeat, party, 'life is good' direction of the album, since RD was obviously more street-oriented. Sunshine and songs like 'What girls like' and 'Who u wit' were the foundation for the 'all he talks about is bytches and money' arguments. Songs like Lucky Me and U must love me were hailed if anything, not crucified. I mean those are the types of songs that made RD, thats what people wanted

You do realize that Sunshine sample/beat is a classic beat right, MC Lyte has a classic track to the same beat. There is nothing wrong with the song imo, the video was on some other shit though, look like the set of Mario Kart or something. lol

How are you gonna tell me what i read. The magazines were saying he was getting soft making songs like You must love me, Lucky Me,etc. I remember reading that article like it's yesterday, i believe it was in the BLAZE magazine with Method Man on the cover.

mc lyte version goes much harder and doesn't have babyface singing all on it, and isnt a damn love song

gtfoh comparing these too

jay-z version is some bitch shit

MC Lyte? O well that changes everything! Cmon fam Sunshine was panned. Nobody wanted the pop Jay z at that time

Bottom line, the consensus was Jay Z mixed the street/intricate songs people liked (Where im from, Lucky me, etc.) with the pop songs we hated. It was the beginning of his formula actually.

You must love me and Lucky me were NOT songs people hated. Bklaze mag was the exception to the rule (if they said that)

I know Jay still salty over that video. He prolly look like this everytime it come on

Vol. 1 is my fav Jigga album. Never understood hate it received, even considering few cross-over tracks included on it. Sunshine wasn't that bad and Foxy killed the video.

LOL, Jay did get heat from that video, everyone was staying he was trying to be like Bad Boy during that era which he was, Puff executive produced Vol 1. Most of the beats on that album were beats that Biggie did not want for "Life After Death" including "Where I'm From" which has a biggie sample in it. But the song itself with it's classic Hip Hop sample and Babyface vocals was actually a good song. The Video was just way to colorful as this was when Hype Williams went from gritty black and white style hard videos to flashy colorful videos. And for the record, Vol 1 is one of Jay's best albums and his lyricism and flow on that record is better than most of his albums after.

Wrong, "Sunshine" is wacker on every level, at least Nas was spitting about reparations on the hook that went over the blonde heads who are culturally clueless.

Ginuwine & Timbaland>>>>>>>Babyface

besides Nas had JayZ wife in the video so he wins by default.

its funny half of the i.c. is blind to the fact that jay-z is gonna go down as one of the greatest to ever touch a mic.....hands down jigga won

Cosign Yeah that's why you would never see Jay perform this song that video was his wtf moment in his career ,he was damn near puffy's shiny suit man stunt double smh.

'Cuz you'all are showing Jay nothing but love and constantly praise The Blueprint III?

Why you actin' like everyone unconditionally loves what he does now?

It was just something for radioplay thats all but besides that song their was nothing really commercial about that album though Vol. 1= Classic
