More generally, let us not forget that the blacks they brought into the New World as slaves were mostly the dark-skinned people of West Africa. If they brought any Somalians, Ethiopians, etc. they were a small number of the total. So light-skin was not originally a characteristic of the black people most of us in this part of the world are descended from.
