If he played today he would have learned todays game and would have had today's coaching. He would have been playing AAU ball since he was 12 and been playing against the best in the country. He would have probably went to a private school like Oak Hill Academy or Dematha and played against top flight competition all through high school. He would have gone on to a top D1 school and starred. He would have ended up being a lottery pick and went on to be an NBA all-star.
You can't just compare Bill Russel in the 60s to players today. The game was played differently and players are groomed from a young age now to be stars in the NBA. If Bill Russel or any great from back in the day came up now with all the resources that are available to players now they would have modern games and be just as good as anyone else if not better. Yeah Bill Russel brought in a time machine from the 60s and planted in the NBA today wouldn't be that great, he'd still be good, but you bring him from a young age and have him come up in today's basketball system and he still be a hall of famer.

I cant ignore how on almost every highlight reel I've seen of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, they're usually only 1 of 2-3 black dudes on the court. Im not sure how many times they were being guarded by other black Centers, but I cant let that slide either way when comparing them to modern day NBA players.
Same thing with Jim Brown who dominated a honkey League NFL from the 50s to the 60s.

This post ftw. People forget that a lot of reasons why guys are way bigger now than back then is because of our current civilization. The foods we eat now is way different than 40-50 years ago. Not too mention thet type of weight training we have now. Look at the players bodies now to back then are polar opposites. Put Dwight Howards body on Bill Russell/Wilt "The Stilt" they'll still be dominate.

No way in hell would he put up 40 a game with the style of play in the NBA now and more athletic big men. The reason why Wilt put up crazy numbers back in those days was because he was bigger than everyone else, he would not have that advantage anymore. The defensive schemes are more complex today too.

although todays players are more atheletic the old days were wayyyy more physical. the games rules have been changed to benefit the offense. i.e. more scoring. that being said some players from the old days wouldve been good in todays game simply cause of their will to win. russel, oscar robertson, west, elvin hayes,havlicek.

Yao Ming is damn near 8 feet tall and can't even average 25+ a night, so that "he was bigger than everybodyelse" excuse doesn't hold water. Would he average 50? No cause like you said defenses are more complex and guys are bigger now. But you give him modern weight training, with the same skill and athleticism he still would be dominate. Besides Dwight Howard how many guys in the league that is 7 feet tall and thart can jump out the gym? Very few, so Wilt would still have an advantage, not as wide a gap but neither was the gap very big with MJ or Kobe when they was throwing up 35+ a night.
Not to mention back then they didn't have illegal defenses so they used to just crowd the fucking paint and guys was just pound on him. So in today's league he would get more one on one opportunities.
