it seems to me that rappers that may not display the most skill seem to get a pass if they are charismatic, so how much does this play a part in a rappers success?

60%, if your style is boring you'll soon be forgotten. Nobody gives a fuck about your lyrics if you can't deliver them right.

i mean rappers like jay z, nas, common, lloyd banks has had long careers yet they aren't the most charismatic. to me you either have to be super talented lyrically or if you aren't that great on the mic then your personality or gimmick has to pick up a lot of the slack.

Y'all niggaz who says Jay-Z doesn't have charisma are wildin'. His on-mic charisma is part of what made him legendary, even on tracks where he doesn't go in his songs have a certain accessability because of his suave/smoothe persona. Off the mic is a different story though.

lyrically he is one of the greats to ever touch the mic so that made up for something.

stop! if u watch jay in his interviews or even just kickin it with his friends he always come off as funny. he might not be in your face but he definitely has a sense of humor and keep the mood very light.

more important than people want to admit...charisma is what makes you pay attention to certain artist/people in general and why they can hold your attention, and why others who may or may not be as talented just don't seem as interesting...charisma is what makes certain posters listen to rappers they KNOW they hate yet still feel the need to listen to and critique their music...

i find myself guilty of this to a certain extent

Jay Z don't have charisma? SMH

if jay didn't rap the way he do but he delivered his rhymes the same he wouldn't have made it this far. you either have to be really ill or extra charismatic no inbetween.

So you're saying that if Jay Z didn't spit with as much charisma and character as he does he wouldn't be as big as he is now? There you go, Jay Z has charisma....right?

i'm talking about lyrically. if jay z was rapping like cappadonna but had the same flow and delivery he wouldn't have made it this far.

I disagree. Jay(prime), Nas, and Common all have charisma imo. When they speak on a track, you listen to what it is they have to say. Their delivery demands attention.

I saw an interview with him some months back, I'm thinking with Jay Leno or one of those other late ngiht shows. Dude was awkward as fuck, I felt embarassed for him. Maybe it was just that day, but it was not a good look

I'd break it down like this:

Charisma- 80% likeability

Beat selection- 10%

Skill/Talent- 10%

Beat selection and a rapper's skill is a matter of opinion where charisma is undeniable.

i'm not saying they are boring rappers but compare them to somebody like a busta rhymes or a redman who were more charismatic on the mic, nas and jay and common had to rely more on their skills and flow.

Busta and Redman are more animated. That doesn't make them more charismatic.
