Small correction: the Dutch were trading with the Japanese during the entire extent of the period of isolation. They were mainly left to the artificial trading post Dejima in Nagasaki, though.

You're right. How could I have forgotten that? They even had a episode of Samurai Champloo addressing the Dutch. lol

Now this doesn't make it right, but what form of comedy doesn't make fun of other cultures? There are japanese that make fun of japanese, whites, and blacks in their comedy routine. There are whites and blacks in america that do that same thing towards asians and their own race. I guess it's part of the reason why I don't watch those type of comedies...the shit is just too ignorant. White people this, black people that, asians this, latinos that. blah blah blah.

Nothing is wrong with that type of comedy. They are just jokes. People aren't supposed to take them as real social commentary.

Oh yeah? I'd be interested in seeing that. I read a book on it and it was pretty interesting.

Correct me if i'm wrong, I honestly can't remember, but the Dutch were still restricted to the ports and weren't allowed to travel around Japan freely.

Well "addressing" was too strong of a word. It was just a mention of the relationship between the Japanese and Dutch via a Dutch character whose family had ties to the Japanese for years.

Yes, that's right. They visited the shogun and had an annual trade delagation for about a hundred years, and they were visited by Japanese prostitutes. I think there were some exceptions made for a few Dutch scholars too.

LOL That video is amazing. If I heard this on the radio, I'd have no clue this dude was black and not Japanese.

Yeah, here is the epidsode

Kinda ironic to use this anime as a reference in this topic considering it is set in "traditional" Japan but is clearly influenced by Hip Hop.

Thanks, red-haired blue-eyed Dutchman. I've seen a few of those.

It's not stereotypical...he didn't create Pai Mei...the legendary Shaw Brothers did. And, if you knew anything about kung-fu you would know that he's not a guru, but a sifu. lol

My Kung Fu teacher looked nothing like that. He looked like ron jeremy.

Japan obviously isn't perfect. In japan, i've seen signs that say no foreigners allowed in this establishment. However, I haven't seen any that single out black people. The people I know and visit in Japan love and respect african american culture. But, I will admit that most of what they know about it is from movies and music. They don't teach african american history in schools, and in all honesty why should they? We don't don't japanese history in america. I've seen black people in japan in Harajuku intimidating japanese women and disrespecting the culture. However, I've also seen idiot white people in Roppongi walking around drunk and disorderly through out the streets screaming at people, and also disrespecting the culture. I won't even go into the US soldiers, both black and white. There are many black people in Japan that are well respected and actually creating a lot of positive attention...one in particular is an african american Enka (old japanese classic "blues" music) named Jero that just won the new artist of the year in that genre...that is almost unheard of and would never have been expected in years.

here is a video from jero...

Did they just share a moment at the 1:24 point of the vid??? LOL

Some black people perpetuate the stereotypes too though. See Chris Johnson.

Some black people does not equate to entire cultures or nations. A few black comedians paid by the white man for their routine do not speak for black nations. The media is the main source of broadcasting what the head of the nation wants the general public to view, so until the black community got their own genuine black run media network without any type of white or sell out house negro influence, then we can compare.

But that's the point of stereotypes, they are played out into the everyone from that race does them. It doesn't just stop at blacks, every race with stereotypes attached have it forwarded to the entire group.

I hear you, but the Chris Johnson's are not subject to the media's control. I'm talking about Chris Johnson that plays for the Titans. I think its fair to admit there are problems on both sides of the fence.
