How do you feel about Mystikal getting out of jail soon?

You know, maybe I'm reaching, but I think a lot of the responses to this topic are representative of the problems with rap music today. Out of sight, out of mind. Some of y'all act like Mystikal's been gone too long to comeback. Mystikal is probably the first rapper to come out of New Orleans and be recognized on a national level. Even if you don't like his music, you've got to respect his accomplishments. The man is a decorated war veteran (Desert Storm), his sister was murdered by an abusive boyfriend, and he still served 6 years and really doesn't seem as bitter as most people would be. When Shyne got out, I don't remember a lot of shit talkin about how he can't make a comeback. And Shyne has not had half the career, or hits, Mystikal has.

If the case were more cut and dry, I'd say "yeah Mystikal's a rapist". But as it stands, I don't think this case is any more credible than Pac's rape case. I know there's a video, but I've never seen it. And I've read the girl's side of the story, but I've never heard Mystikal's. Bottom line, if I wasn't there, I've got to see hard evidence. Some women like to scream rape to divert attention from foul shit they've done, like use checks they stole from their boss. Also, I don't think he was ever charged with rape. There's just a lot of details in that case that don't add up, in my opinion. If Mystikal gets with the right label (I don't know if he's still on Jive) and receives enough promotion, he has the talent to pick up where he left off.

You can't really compare Pac's case with Mystikal cause according to the story of the victim in Pac's case, he didnt actually rape her, it was more as if he let it happen. He really only got charged for touching her on her ass at the club prior to the night of the alledged rape. Mystikal on the other hand, was on tape fucking her with other guys.

My point is, if that tape showed Mystikal and his bodyguard forcibly raping the woman, I'm pretty sure they would've both been charged with first degree rape. And I'm also pretty sure that would carry a longer sentence than 6 years in the state of Louisiana. It is my understanding that they blackmailed her into having sex with them after she was caught stealing money from Mystikal. Now I'm certainly not excusing what happenned, but unless they had a gun to her head, she could've gone to the police before she went through with it. Again, I wasn't there, so I don't know all the details. But this is what I mean about it not being a very cut & dry case. It's like the sayin goes, "There's 3 sides to every story - his side, her side, and the truth".

In the grand scheme of things, 6 years is not a long time. I realize in the fast-food industry of rap music, it is. And in my opinion that is a large part of what's wrong with hip hop. If a song is not instantly catchy and appealing to the entire world, it's not a hit. D.j.'s don't work records that don't instantly appeal to people after 30 seconds of play, unless they're paid enough. Some of my favorite albums were not instant favorites. I gave them a fair listen and eventually they grew on me. A lot of people had forgotten about Dr. Dre, but when he dropped Chronic 2001, 7 years after The Chronic, it was an instant hit. Because it was a quality album that was promoted correctly. It's been awhile since Outkast dropped an album, but if they dropped another classic next week, people will still check it out. In any other genre of music, 6 years would not be considerred too long to return. Look at Sade. I'd rather wait 6 years on a quality album than waste money on a rushed album that was recorded in 2 weeks on the back of a tour bus. Just because you put out a mixtape every week does not automatically qualify you as a good rapper.

The difference between Mystikal and the artists that you named are:

1) Mystikal isn't as big of an artist. By the time he went away, he'd already hit his peak popularity wise. He was fresh off of superstardom from the success of Let's Get Ready which kind of dipped when he released Tarantula.

2) The whole sound scape and atmosphere has changed tremendously since '04. In order to make an impact, he has to re-introduce himself. A mixtape is an outlet to do that even if it's old unheard, unreleased material mixed with some new songs. Mystikal has an original and unique style that took the game a while to catch on to. Of course he has a core fanbase, but the sound has changed so much that he's going to have to update that even. Outside of KLC, the original members of BBTP/Medicine Men have been AWOL since Mystikal's last album. Craig B. hasn't had credits on anything since the departure from No Limit. Mo B. Dick and O'dell have been quiet as well. DJ Precise hasn't made much if any noise since Let's Get Ready. That leaves The Neptunes as the last remaining producers that were mainstays on a Mystikal album even though they were around only for the last two. Either he has KLC and The Neptunes lace the whole thing or throw some newcomers and/or other outside producers into the mix.

What do you all mean when you say "today's rap fans"? Are you referring to 12-18 year olds? What does that make you... yesterday's Hip Hop fan?

I don't think there's anything wrong with being a young rap fan, I was at one point (I'm 31). The only thing that bothers me is when people don't know their history or have never listened to the songs/artists that their criticizing or dissing. There's a lot of East coast artists I don't like, but I've given them a fair listen before I've formed an opinion.
