How come Nas can't get to Platinum anymore?

You could say the internet/downloading is the reason (which is part of the prob) but I think Nas is missing plat because mainstream rap is not the mainstream rap it used to be. Think about it....most the shit that sales today is overly sexy, talking bout money, drugs, and all types of bs. I'm not sayn Nas doesnt talk about some of those same things he just does it different (with a point). You can hate Nas all day but your a pure liar if you say he dont be droppiing knowledge most times. Nowadays niggas wanna have Swag (two thumbs and big toes up for D. Banner for that joint), wanna be pretty, wanna be hard, wanna be hard and pretty at the same time (KMSL). To be honest it seems we (hip-hop) are lost. You know whose to blame right?.....yea thats right...THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL.

Lol @ ItzGravitation trolling ya'll.

Anyways, i'm sure Nas would like to go platinum, but he refuses to make a buffoon of himself, and hop on the latest trends like some of his counterparts...although it would be nice to see Nasty Nas craft songs more catered to the radio/mainstream without sacrificing his artistic integrity.

And for those that don't think that Nas doesn't care about going platinum, ya'll think when he was recording HHID, Untitled and DR, that he expected blockbuster sales?...

...It's obvious Nas has a different agenda.

I find it hard to value anyone's opinion that primarily values an artist's worth on record sales.

Oh yeah, Nas is the GOAT.

Kanye and Jay have done a lot for the genre... 50... eh... not so much so. His sharp, sudden decline in popularity lets me know that he was more a fad than a legitimate contender for GOAT emcee.

Wayne... Possibly.

And, pardon the cliche, Illmatic was a blueprint for hip-hop heads. That's what he's done. None of the artists you named, (Jay and Ye included) have an album that made as big an impact as Illmatic. Sorry bruh. That's all he HAD to do for hip-hop.

The fact that he's done more is only a testament to the dude's skill.

i never hear that Illmatic is a blueprint shit except here.

Down South, niggas aint feeling that shit

niggas wasnt feeling it when it came out.

West Coast niggas wasnt feeling it.

Its a regional classic cuz NY niggas bought majority of the copies.

EM didnt need a gimmick to go plat with recovery
dude just made a great album
so not wanting to make catchy shit is a lame excuse.
dude just dont have the skills to go plat like Drake, Wayne, Jay or Em or Ye when albums started to not sell

You can't argue with fools. True Nas fans know musically he's GOAT and that's what matters most. The music made not the sales. Niggas is sheep I tell you.

Nas been done all that. After years of being indecisive. selling his soul in the process at times trying to balance it all, Nas finally realised you gotta make the music you wanna make first and your real fans will respect that and if you go platinum, that's a bonus. J-Cole (a Nas type by nature) will soon understand this the hard way.

Hence you can see the progression from Nas's recent albums from HHID, to Nigger to Distant Relatives. Nas is NOT a Jay-Z (no disrespect). He's an artist first, not a businessman. Listen to the lyrics of Hero, yeah it's on a mainstream beat but please listen to the lyrics and you'll know the difference between a Jay and a Nas. Jay and Nas represent The Money and the Message- but equally important ways to make change. Now I understand that (no more hate for Jay). I just relate more to the message more so relate more to Nas.

I've been around the country, and a lot of the world, everyone knows Illmatic is damn near hip-hop's King James New Testament...

Your posts suggest that you were prolly like what...? 3 or 4 when it came out? Or were you even born? If I'm wrong, so be it, but your "list" of good rappers is identical to that of an 18 year old who doesn't even know who the hell someone like Rakim is, or why he's so popular to everyone older. (Including your favorite rappers)

It always amazes me when the most popular artists are familiar with older emcees and respect their work, yet the fans continuously spit on 'em.

You seem to be just another one. No appreciation for shit you can't see beyond your own nose.

Lol... "Niggas" like you are funny...

The question is does Nas need to go plat,he's still the best Emcee the culture has seen, and one of the most influential.I don't see artists making tribute albums/mixtapes

for Ready to Die or Reasonable Doubt or even AEOM or 7 day theory.Even Jay Electronica has made a tribute song "My World" based off Nas' The World is Yours

Fashawn,Elzhi,Charles Hamilton amongst others have all made Illmatic themed albums saluting Nas.

Album sales aren't everything, some of our cultures icons never moved major units...Rakim,Kane,KRS,Shan,EPMD to name a few.

that sound like some made up shit.
come to Dallas and see how many Nas fans there are
i know about early rap
the 80s was bullshit
niggas started to advance in the 90s and lyrics were at the best from like 98 til now
Illmatic was simple as hell
was Illmatic more lyrical than the Blueprint or Reasonable Doubt?
What about Tha Carter or Carter 2?
and just cuz im 21 now doesnt mean i cant judge Illmatic properly.
The shit is on my computer and i listen from time to time.
but shit is mediocre
Thank Me Later and all Kanye albums shit on Illmatic
