Hev had crossover appeal and a clean image, both traits that people like to front on. But Hev was versatile, made great records and albums, and he was a complete emcee. It's a shame he never got his due.

Heavy D's legacy is lasting and still has impact to this day. Think about it...Busta Rhymes first appeared on a Heavy D song, Biggie first appeared on a Heavy D song, and he let Puffy intern and be his assistant when no one else would give Puffy a chance. When everyone was opening up to add swearing in their songs and talking about all the negatives that life offers, Heavy D pushed back against that and spoke positively in his songs and (for the most part) kept the swearing out.

A lot of people have Hev to thank for their careers and success: Andre Harrell, who had Hev as the flagship artist for Uptown Records for years; Puffy, who got his job at Uptown after Hev convinced Andre to hire him; Jodeci, who got their deal after Hev talked Andre into listening to their demo; and of course the artists who got deals directly through him (Al B. Sure, Monifah, Soul for Real). Hev had 25 years in the game (1986-2011), but he put in enough work for three or four lifetimes.
