IMHO the genre is shifting and many NY rappers are stuck with SMACK DVD freestyles and shit. There wasn't much growth for the last 10 years or so. Besides, there was more focus on other regions. Perhaps the reason everyone believes NY fell off is because of the poor quality mainstream NY hip hop is producing.

They won't be coming back to Hip Hop anymore. No one is intimidated by NY except themselves. Notice how shook they were during the 2Pac era. Out of all 4 regions they are the softest.

NY really isn't putting out much music outside of the old heads and Nicki. The South seems to have the star power with Rick Ross and others. Some other East Coast cities are getting shine like Pittsburgh and the Midwest is strong as usual. The West has been up and down since it's reign on rap.
