this generation made hip hop more POPular than even. Like Britney Spears popular. At a cost though imo. When PE went plat, when Wu went plat, Redman went gold, BIG went plat, totally different shit cause it was against the grain of mainstream music. hip hop is mainstream music now, which is good in a way, but its also pop music with all the formulas and gimmicks that come with that. and hip hop was supposed to stay different no matter how much it sold, thats what it used to stand for. i cant do shit about it though except listen to the shit i like, i guess others who share my view do the same.
I don't ever want my brothers to feel discouraged from having discussions on the politics of HipHop, the direction of HipHop or censor their opinions on HipHop matters.
Many whites and fearful Negros get agitated when people talk about race in HipHop, they label it "Radical", "Militant" "Kufi-headed" & "Pro-Black-bullshit".......we just call it conversation on our culture.
Any conversation on culture-banditry and the "popish" direction of the culture will be met with the same defense: 'Dont listen to it,
'iIt helps sell records, 'its expanding the culture, 'let that girl cook, 'that white girl thick.....same ol same.
So yeah in another 5 years the streets in HipHop will be nonexistent and the frat-rappers like Wiz, Pop-rappers like B.O.B & white-rappers like Mac Miller will be the standard....with a few mulattos like Nicki, Drake, & J. Cole. to mix it up.
Students of music and history can see the same subtle signs that the culture is going the direction of Rock and Jazz, and we discuss it and share this knowledge in hopes that people will support the artists that are keeping the essence of the culture alive.
