Not surprised

I don't buy the '“Most of my family from the South. So, once school’s out, we go down South. Whenever I go down, my cousins listen to....' because NY radio been playing the same southern cuts since the mid 00's

Fact is, 90's and millennial babies were raised on the southern sound. You have the one's and twos who try to stay authentic to the NY sound but them kids today don't wanna hear that and 80's don't want to hear an imitation of what we know, especially when our artist still put out music.

not a big deal...young ppl weren't raised on early jay-z or nas...if they go back and groove to the classics thats fine but i'm not surprised if they don't want to

generational gap blah blah blah...

these new rappers are lazy and proud of it. writers know the classic works... artists know classic artwork... scholars know the work of those who came before them.

somehow, its become fashionable in hip hop to be oblivious to things that happened 15 years ago... this is how culture dies.

Shit is sad. I can understand not making Nas or jay your top rapper or even putting them in your top 5 (even though I'd question your music knowledge), but not knowing any Hov or Nas verse and your profession is rapper is blasphemous. That's like trying to be an NBA player but never studying jordans fade away or kobes cross and shoot. I'm not surprised dude saying this is from the south tho. His music is trash. Nigga sound like he whining through his verses

He's young.. he might know more about Jeezy or T.I. Than Jay or NAS. It reminds me of Outkast "fans" who don't know their music before Stankonia. This is a whole new generation now.. A lot of these kids don't know shit about 90's hiphop.

the thing is, the "southern cuts since the mid 90's" that get radio play, we dont even listen to that shit lol....it's all about what the hoes can bop to

dude is trash but i believe him....my sister was the only person i knew that listened to Jay before Big Pimpin and she's 34....so your second comment has some truth to it....cuz she listens to 0 rap now lol

i dont think those type are purposely trying to dodge the history of their profession....a lot of rappers have talked about how they dont listen to this and havent heard that....because they dont want that to influence their music...if you sit down and binge a bunch of Jay albums and then go try to write u cant help but to end up sounding like him, or a version of him

*shrugs*

also there is this weird notion that these cats start listening to hip hop when they like 20... that aint weird to any of y'all? i been listening to hip hop since before i can remember....

I'm 22 and I can recite lyrics from all those artists you named

he's 25. him being young isn't a valid excuse. it's not like artists old music isn't still available out there. albums, spotify, youtube etc. it's not hard to find. he's just uninterested, but that's cool

And a lot of rappers do covers of other rappers in concert

To each his own, but dude is 25 was 10 in 2000....Unless he started listening to rap in 05 or some shyt where was he hearing the shyt that he is influenced by.....Southern shyt wasnt gettin spins up north like that, so I'm calling this b.s....Even if he wasnt listening to Nas or Jay.....Nigga wasnt hearing DMX in 2000, Ja Rule in 2001, Cam and Dipset in 03, 50 in 2003? Yo if you go down south for the summer, what about the other months...lol....Cmon homie

Damn Fetty wtf? Not even one Jay-Z or Nas verse? I find that a little shameful but he doesn't seem the type to be into real lyrical songs

It's fine if you can't recite their lyrics off the top of your head that's fine, but he makes it sound like if he heard you sayin "I got 99 problems..." he'd say "damn homie, thats a lot of problems. you alright? need some weed?"
