Psychological thriller??? Lmao hell no, that couldn't be further from the truth

The movie had a lot of depth but the replies to this thread seemed like how people were in the theater when I saw it.

If you went into this expecting a Tyler Perry/Steve Harvey/Kevin Hart entertainment flick, of course you'd think it was boring. You should've took one look at the cast and realized this was a serious film. There were several scenes where some real shit was being said and people were hooping and hollering like it was meant to be funny. But it wasn't.

I saw it with my girl who had studied the screenplay in college and we both recognized the themes of the post-civil rights Era black family dynamic, black fatherhood, alcoholism, manhood, and what it means to be black in America. There was also through line of the existence of the working middle class from an economic standpoint. Maybe you could relate to some of it, maybe you couldn't, but regardless, it was a reflective film not meant to entertain.

Denzel Washington bodied the film. He has a charisma that tends to easily dominate others, through no fault of his own.

Except the infidelity revelation scene. Viola Davis dug deep and gave a performance worthy of best supporting actress award in any awards show.

My favorite character was played by Stephen Henderson (the friend). That's how men are. Even best friends: empathetic but still keeping a respectful distance.

all i want to know is...does the audience laugh at the part where the little nigga said because you like me?

Yes and it kinda takes the air out of the scene. The shit ain't supposed to be funny.

Good ass movie don't know what you niggas were expecting....if you seen the play then you would have an idea of what it would be

Denzel 23 mill

Pulp Fiction was filmed on an 8million dollar budet & John Travolta was only paid 100grand.

Max must be right. Denzel musta made alot of paper on this.

You should.

It's a good ass movie. It's just not a coonfest. Not Alot of people are used to seeing black people on screen not cooning it up.

explain.....im slow bruh. are you saying that that scene that i asked about was the only scene in the movie that got laughs?

I was laughing at the beginning of the movie when Denzel was talking to his friend in the backyard. Something about how white people ordering soup get more meat than soup and black people have be a detective to get some meat.

He really controlled the movie, so when he wasn't in scenes it felt like they lost a presence that loomed over.

Saw this last night...simplistically, I can say troy was really a trash nigga lol but when I really thought it...that jim crow time period, even in the North, was the real "villain" of this story. Troy and Rose's marriage and their family dynamic was a product of the lessons they got from their parents and the lack of ability to really break the cycle and give/show their kids something different.

It's not something I'll be watching again anytime soon cuz it was pretty heavy...but this was way more nuanced than I feel people give it credit for.

Denzel was an asshole because his daddy was an asshole

He was hardheaded, self centered, and cocky

Great performance by Denzel tho. He made u like & hate him in the film
