There's an interview in which he says something along the line of him being the only latino in his hood who would actually battle other MC's and that's what caught their attention. You had to have skill to be down with Diggin' In The Crates.

Joe was mad ill, he could also craft a raw boom bap album back in the day. He fell off, but he drops something decent here and there. His first three albums are some of the best and grimiest albums of the 90s. Part of it is complacency since he's made his money, but also not really being close to the other heads who used to push him. You still hear his name even after all this years, so props to him.
