How is Miss America doing, I'm sorry I wasn't aware it was released for commercial purpose. When the radio joint drops then u can say something. Game had a mixtape that hot him signed. Just admit most these underground niggas aren't stars or can't make the right records to crossover

Duh but u don't have to cross over to live good off Music. Everybody is not made to be a super star but the game shouldn't only have like 5 artist either.

I listened to this the other day... After the interview I had a new found respect for Ebro.. He started the dialogue.. Hopefully rappers from the City take heed and start making music everyone can enjoy because like Ebro said.. The NY market is very small.. NY, NJ, Connecticut... Whereas someone from Miami might get the hole south to support their music... The playing field has changed.. And the rappers need to adapt...

This is what me and some other posters were talking about in a thread a while back when people were asking about Houston falling off. There's 6 million people in Houston, that's a huge market...you can create a career solely in that city alone in a do damn good. Other markets aren't built like that.

I do like what was being said about the Fugees and playing Killing Me Softly even though the label didn't want it to be played. Often times on albums there's way hotter records than the singles that come out, but for some reason you'd never hear them. Imagine if dj's hadn't played Killing Me Softly...I remember when Fugee La came out. It was dope, but it didn't really get alot of burn like that. It was more "Oh shit, the girl from Sister Act 2 is nice"...

How many of those 6 actually like Rap Music and how many of those actually buy it? And people will more than likely purchase from somebody else than a local. Between NY, PA, NJ, and CT there's 20 million + people. But everybody don't like or even listen to Rap.

Ya'll niggas are delusional.

Kanye bridged the gap between mainstream and underground?

LOL.

So why in the fuck does the people he used to fuck with, have a hard time having their music played consistently on these very radio stations that Kanye "bridged the gap for"?

That nigga rode the wave of what some people considered "real hip-hop" to establish credibility. Look at his early work with the Talib Kweli's, Mos Def's, Dilated Peoples, Slum Villages, etc. Once people were bamboozled into thinking Kanye would take hip-hop in a new direction, the media outlets hopped on, proclaiming that Kanye had "the respect of the underground."

And who in the fuck determines what "music people can relate to" is?

That shit is subjective.

Person A may prefer hearing something more simplistic lyrically and beat driven as opposed to something punchline heavy, or vice versa, that's their choice.

Person B may prefer hearing something more esoteric and metaphor heavy, where the lyrics can be interpreted a variety of ways, as opposed to the run of the mill club song, or vice versa, again, that's their choice.

Let's look at the "music people can relate to" that Hot 97 plays:

1 CLIQUE KANYE WEST F/ BIG SEAN & JAY-Z

2 DIAMONDS RIHANNA

3 MY MOMENT DJ DRAMA F/ 2 CHAINZ

4 THINKIN BOUT YOU FRANK OCEAN

5 DICED PINEAPPLES RICK ROSS F/ DRAKE

6 POP THAT FRENCH MONTANA F/ DRAKE & LIL WAYNE

7 N***** IN PARIS JAY-Z & KANYE WEST

8 MERCY KANYE WEST F/ BIG SEAN & PUSHA-T

9 LEMME SEE USHER F/ RICK ROSS

10 F*CKIN PROBLEMS ASAP ROCKY F/ DRAKE

11 SWIMMING POOL KENDRICK LAMAR

12 NO WORRIES LIL WAYNE F/ DETAIL

13 CREW LOVE DRAKE F/ THE WEEKND

14 YOUNG AND GETTIN IT MEEK MILL F/ KIRKO

15 FOR THE LOVE FABOLOUS

16 GUAP BIG SEAN

17 NO LIE 2 CHAINZ F/ DRAKE

18 SHE DON'T PUT IT DOWN JOE BUDDEN

19 I'M DIFFERENT 2 CHAINZ

20 TAKE IT TO THE HEAD DJ KHALED F/ VARIOUS

21 GIRL ON FIRE ALICIA KEYS

22 UP! LOVERANCE F/ 50 CENT

23 ADORN MIGUEL

24 BALL TI F/ LIL WAYNE

25 AMEN MEEK MILL F/ DRAKE/ JEREMIH

26 WICKED GAMES THE WEEKND

27 SPECIAL DELIVERY BRIDGET KELLY

28 CHAMPAGNE FOR THE PAIN RED CAFE'

29 DO YOU MIGUEL

30 B*TCH DON'T KILL MY VIBE KENDRICK LAMAR

These niggas are concerned with advertising dollars, like all of the conglomerates.

Tell the truth, they want everyone to sacrifice their artistic integrity for radio play.

I think the potential market is larger the same way a miami artist(only Ross really) can go outside his market. I would draw it up like a battle map and...forget it. I'm available for consultation you rappers.

Houston is no where near 6 million unless your talking about the metro area, and still 6 million isn't that big. NYC for instance is 25-30 million, LA is 15 million.

I'm not saying all 6 million will listen to one artist, but it provides a big enough underground scene that can sustain itself...NYC used to have that but clearly from what's being said it's not like that anymore or at the very least there's been a huge shift in how the NYC rap scene sustains itself on both a mainstream and underground level. .

At the end of the day.. It's about the Music.. If you make good music.. That is relatable.. And Melodic.. There will be a place for you not only on urban radio.. But in peoples cars, ipods, etc..

Dude just posted a list of songs that is playing on hot 97.. But all of those records are melodic.. And overall good music.. It doenst take much thought to enjoy it.. You dont have to be from a specific background to enjoy it.. You can just cut it on and its sonically appealing.. Thats what it boils down too..

One of the things I loved about Hip Hop was that it didn't have to always be melodic.

basically ebro said that he's beholden to his corporate masters in indiana that know nothing about hip-hop and what he plays has nothing to do with skill, talent or soul... just money and whatever the current fad is.

just like the bullshit music they play all day.

It's really simple...If you're applying for a job...You have no reason to think you'll be employed unless you can fulfill the duties of the job...Why would the company hire niggas who can't do the work...That doesn't mean you'll be broke your whole life...That just means you need to either learn to do the job well or go find another company...There's more than one path way to success...

To me current NY artist should look at they earlier predecessors from the early 90's when the West blew up. Artist out West was damn near guaranteed 2x plat while NYC was gold to Plat, the West sound was more national while NY sound was more global(national sales matter more), but look at how many stars it created while many of those West coast plaid wearing artist are forgotten. Zulu Nation, New Jack swing all stood the test of time and more legends were created.
