I think he was in a thriller called nick of time or out of time back in the day and ninth gate is not underrated IMO it was one of the worst movies I ever seen.

As for Depp, I always thought he's overrated because of quirkiness of his characters. He rarely has a chance to play normal role where he can display wide range of human emotions. When he gets it, he usually fails (Public Enemies).
