Yeah I sorta caught that a second after posting, oh well.

We've been studying a lot on doing it the complete organic, indie way, and I just needed to see if we could cut out that high price tag of a label......as opposed to running it from the publishing company, which will only cost around 25-100 to start.

Yea I believe Ron Artest started his label through his publishing company and Ive heard of a few indie labels being started that way. I know for a fact labels can be used as a publishing company so I have no reason to think it couldnt be reversed.

http://www.rapcointelpro.com/Starting An Indie Label.htm

that should answer alot of your questions.

I've been all up and down rapcointelpro actually, that post's been bookmarked for months and I've been referencing it, as well as other sources. Cool, thanks.

More often than not, a publishing company an record label are two different entities. They are sometime owned by the same person, but are seperate because of how a pulishing company functions. Would this person publish/distribute other artists?

NO!!!!!! Please don't try that. You'll be putting yourself in a ditch. There is alot of paperwork, money, time, and legal bs you have to go through to start a label. A publishing company takes no time and little effort to establish. There's a difference between the two for a reason.

Eventually, but for the time being the publishing company will be for his own sake.

I started an LLC. Only cost me 80 to incorporate in my state.
Not super concerned with publishing from the onset because I'm unknown and don't expect to sale anything yet anyway. Essentially, it's a holding company while I grow.
Phases...

I did that too for around $89 and only took around 10 minutes max...

record labels and publishing companies are two different entities they can't be the same because there would be a conflict of interest

but all major labels are affliated with their own publishers who share the same parent company

for example Warnell/Chappell Music is the publishing company responsible for the publishing of the labels on Warner Music Group

Exactly how did you guys accomplish this? I've been researching LLC's but to me it seems more confusing than to start a pub, but I'm more interested in trying the LLC route.

Yeah but a publishing company won't front you the money to make an album or videos or promotion but if you have the money for that yourself you can keep alot more of the money you make off of your work, I heard somewhere before that Master P did something to that effect and he got like 50% of the profit.
