Rakim did it. I don't think Paid In Full nor Follow The Leader contain any profanity whatsoever and both are considered two of the best Hip Hop albums ever.

As for my favorite rapper, I think these guys could pull it off:

Andre 3000

Nas

Common

To be real, curse words are often times just filler words. Sometimes they can emphasize certain emotions, but in most cases curse words are just there. If taken away, those words wouldn't be missed.

A couple years ago Ghostface was talking about dropping an album with no profanity, I think that'd be interesting to hear coming from an artist like him, hell, he'd probably invent his OWN words in place of cursing lol..

Nas, Common, Lupe Fiasco, and Kanye are definitely capable both lyrically and conceptually of doing it also...

People already said Will Smith...

i think it could be done, if the artist didn't promote it as a curse free album, when you put the focus on that you just seem corny like Chamillionaire

you hit the nail right on the head. if rappers wouldnt promote that it didnt have cussing in it they would probaly fair better.

Just to add to the conversation, LL Cool J released a couple of albums without cursing: 10 and The Definition.

Can rappers make an album without cursing? Sure they can. They just have to put some effort into it and find ways to not curse. Back in the 90s rappers used to write radio versions to their songs all the time and that practice is still in play a little bit today with some rappers. Also, a lot of us curse but can control ourselves when we're around kids, in church, around our grandparents, etc., so it's not like rappers have to curse all the time.

In the end though nobody really cares if there's cursing or not in an album. Most people know rap isn't for prudes and the critics will say what they want to say. Rap has already built a reputation for being vulgar and everybody has accepted that, so we don't pay cursing any mind. It can be done though, but it's not like a rapper has to to prove himself.

In 80's rappers rarely cussed. PE, Rakim, MC Shan, KRS rarely used any vulgarities. I heard Slick Rick was the first to use word "bitch" on the record. Nowadays even R&B singers cuss, so it would be hard, but artists like Nas, Lupe, Cudi, Kanye, Common, Mos Def etc are surely capable of it.
