Cause if they don't that some bullshit, these teams and league is essentially using their likeness to make a profit or do they forfeit all that stuff when they sign their contracts?

All the licensing goes through the union. The players may get a cut from that...but I think it depends on the collective barganing agreement. I believe ( I could be wrong) players negotiate their contract based on their total worth. So a Randy Moss may sign for more (a mill or two) than say a Steve Smith because Randy is a lot more popular and his jersey may be flying of the shelf. I dont think the player gets a direct cut of the sales.

If I was a player I'd take the payoff up front in my contract than rely on the teams marketing and sales to get my cheque.

Depends on how their agent negotiated their contracts. Most star players will since they are like a name brand and that is easily leveraged by an agent.

They get a percentage from the jerseys sold to retail stores, not what is sold from the stores

In the NBA, the total receipt from jersey sales are lumped into one big pool and then all the players are paid equally from that pool. So yes, the Celtics' Brian Scalabrine gets the same amount as the Paul Pierce and is grateful to Pierce every year for that paycheck. So if not money, could it be ego? Let's see, millionaire athletes competing against one another on the biggest stage of their sports. I think it's safe to say there is an element of pride. It's like winning a popularity contest, and better because it's measurable. And Lebron's not the only one by any means, Kobe himself changed his number from 8 to 24 and experienced a big jump in new jersey sales.

Yeah, it's similar to publishing money in the music and literary industry.

The crime is that the NCAA gets away with making money off of college athletes just by not putting their names on the back. But you KNOW if you get a #2 Auburn jersey at the mall WHO you're getting it for. And the college players get nathaniel for that.
