Did Nas really take his Illmatic cover idea from this album?

The way I see it this isn't biting. This is Hip Hop. Hip Hop has drawn inspiration from Jazz, Blues, R&B, Dance Hall and other forms of Music from the get go. So, all Nas did was dig in the crates and find a Gem. What we should do now is actually listen to the original album.

Thanks for the link. Fly ish going down right now.

In a genre so filled with homages, parodies, remixes, remakes, covers, sampling and more it makes sense that he got his idea from somewhere else

Wtf, how ya niggas gon' call this biting?

To me this is a clear example of not biting at all. Plus, when did Nas say he created the album cover or that he was the first with one like that?

Artist do that all the time to draw a particular point to the audience, homage to the album/artist or whatever. Some of you can't be serious..

Nah, I don't have the vinyl to this, I already know I don't. But I will take that journey homie.

dope find. doesn't take anything away from the Illmatic cover. and yea, biting doesn't seem like the right word for this.

It's unclear whether young Nasir was even aware of where he drew the inspiration from. He's usually pretty open about his influences and homage he pays and I never heard him mention this. Coulda done it subconsciously after seeing this record lying around his parents apartment.

Exactly! Now if he took it from another rapper then that is biting. This is no different then sampling but with photography! It's a jazz group from the 70's! Redman's Dare is a Darkside does the same thing with Parliment-Funkadelic I believe!
