the original illuminati were modeled on the jesuits, but stictly opposed the view of the jesuits. Being too revolutionary, they were both banned from bavaria, germany. A lot of people now believe that this led the remainding illuminati members to go underground and still run things even to this day.

In reality, the illuminati never garnered enough power to do anything really big. At best they had small ties in stirring the french revolution, but that's it.
