Union President Says Driver, Passenger Had Trouble Before

DETROIT -- A 51-year-old Detroit Department of Transportation bus driver who was stabbed by a passenger early Sunday morning said he's too afraid to go back to work.

The driver on the Crosstown line, who asked that his name not be released, said he and a male passenger got into an argument around 1:30 a.m. after the passenger wanted to exit the bus through a rear door instead of the front.

"He reached around the young lady that was standing there and punched me in the face," the driver said.

The driver said the man then pulled out what looked like a hunting knife and stabbed him in the hand, leg and face.

The passenger got off at a stop near Mansfield Street and Warren Avenue on the city's west side.

Amalgamated Transit Union Local 26 President Henry Gaffney said the driver and passenger knew each other from a previous problem in the past.

"We go out and do our job every day. Everybody is uneasy at this time, not only because of the incident last night but because of the incidents through the last six or seven months," Gaffney said.

Gaffney said he is planning to ask Detroit police if they will put officers on some buses to help curb any future incidents.
