It seems to be a response to the perception of race and gender.

If you perceive the black male as intimidating just by virtue of his gender and phenotype, you can only be put at ease by tearing away at what makes him, him. The domino effect on black women is that they are viewed as non-feminine and unattractive already so by putting a dress and a wig on a black man to portray a black woman, it justifies the "black women are masculine" perception that non-blacks have.

Now, if you don't have those perceptions, then you won't be entertained by this. Entertainment, as we all know, is most effective when it ties closely with everyday reality. If you don't see black men as intimidating or black women as non-feminine and non-human, then there is no entertainment factor.

Then you have the fools who will dance for the camera. Martin Lawrence said a few years ago of the criticism of his cross dressing, "If you knew how much they pay for me to do it, you wouldn't criticize." That's the line in the sand.
