But-- Some of my Kenyan and Nigerian patnas were the reason I made it thru a couple tough classes. They showed love

So niggas dont wanna compete no more? How ironic

It's not that they don't want to compete. It's that they want a fair competition.

American blacks have oppressed in ways that blacks from these other countries have not been. There is a big difference between colonialism and what American blacks have gone through, for example.

U heard about boko haram b?

You do realize that a lot of African countries been going through genocide for thousands of years?

You do realize apartheid ended in 1994 waaay after jim crow?

You do realize slavery is still going on in Africa and a lot of East Africans are subject to Arabian slavery where they even sell them on facebook?

Educate yourself b.

Apartheid was a consequence of British / Dutch colonization in South Africa. How is it America's duty to right that wrong?

Its not about American righting a wrong in another country. Its this silly idea that black folks in other countries somehow have it easier which is stupid

You're right. I think the larger issue is, not just Africans but foreigners in general come to the states educate themselves and then take those skills and potential tax dollars back to their own countries. So, while I personally accept our African brothers and sisters. I totally understand and some what support what these students are demanding. We are losing the opportunity to strengthen the Black American communities through higher education. Because, there's alot of truth to Africans not really giving a shit about Black American issues. Which, is almost a slap in the face because, many Black Americans not only care but support Africans.

But lets not pretend its all open arms and acceptance for black folks from other countries especially Africans. Being told theyre not really black, repeating white folks jokes about Africa about living in huts and being uncivilized. Like niggas don't remember shit like "African booty scratcher" or jokes about how dark skin they are...that it also a slap in the face

There's no reason to pretend. But how about you move beyond elementary and junior high when we all were saying and doing ignorant shit to each other? We are discussing an age group and demographic that is "educated".

If we wanted to delve into animosity or feelings of contempt, Black Americans could feel some type of way because, of Africa and Africans lack of involvement\support of oppressed Blacks in America. In addition to the ass whippings and great Black men and women who gave their lives for not just Africans, but Asians etc to be able to carve out a living here in the states..

Even as an adult I've had conversations with people who are shocked that there are black people in Latin America...you want to talk education the average American has little clue of how the rest of the world outside the US operates and are shocked to find out shit is different in many places. So your demographic ain't as educated as you would like to assume

yea...i feel stupid sometimes with what i thought about the rest of the world.

running into to so many black people in europe.....i can kinda see why they look at black americans the way they do. i dont like it but i understand where they coming from.

Calling them international students is misleading. We are talking mostly about kids who were born and raised here. Went to the same schools and grew up on the same neighborhoods.. Granted I'm not there but are these kids not American?.. Like what's the problem? We all black..

Everyone has to accept this in order for unity to happen. And in my experience Africans don't accept that fact. As it's been said already. They are Nigerian, South African, Ethiopian etc. Saying they are Black is a stain. It means they have sided with Black Americans. And foreigners don't want that designation. Black Americans are the scourge of American society. This has been broadcast around the world and that stereotype\perception is what people believe.

Bro I'm African.. And I'm telling you we all black.. Nevermind the cultural differences.. We are all black period.. Anyone who says otherwise.. African America or first Gen African immigrant is out of Touch with reality.. We acknowledge our differences but we still know we all black..

I am agreeing with you. We are all Black. Once you step foot on American soil you are Black. All that individual nationalistic jazz is off the table. However, you and I aren't the reality though. And again my opinions aren't exclusive to Africans. Spanish speaking Blacks are probably the worse of the lot.

You talk education in one post yet make an ignorant statement here. If you were as educated as you thought then you would know more about all the very real clear elements of African culture that has shaped and still remains an important part of the culture of many Latin countries. From the style of dress to religious beliefs and practices, where do you think Santeria comes from its a mashup of African religions, to even the style of Spanish and the cadence in which it is spoken...but you're part of the demographic that should know this right?

I am addressing people who migrate to the US and are ignorant of America's racial divide. white supremacy in the U.S. doesn't discriminate against American Blacks and Latin Blacks. So, miss me with your elementary assed responses. I know plenty well about Africa's influence the world over. Get on topic or STFU.

Its the idea that if you don't "look" how they think you should then to many Americans you just can't be anything else. I've said before on here how growing up people didn't believe my own mother was my real mom because of how light she is. Just ignorant to the concept of how different black people look and the different shades we come in. And it still happens as an adult. My son is lighter than me with curly ass hair and I get asked all the time "what is he mixed with?" Because people simply just assume shit. That's why I think the point brought up about education and age is moot because those ignorant ideas dont just stop with childhood jokes. Those ideaa get passed down from somebody parents. Kids dont just make that shit up out of thin air

Its good for this place. We can agree on other wild issues in other threads.

Anyways... I don't have a problem with the black student union requesting the University to target more

Black Americans .... as opposed to recent African or Caribbean immigrants. This is not an affront to my hard working Caribbean or African bredren. This is one single lifeline that targets those who's lineage was impacted by Slavery/ Jim Crow/ and Systemic racism here in North America specifically.

While not enough in the least, Its a essentially a small micro form of reparations especially if tuition and housing is covered imo.

You're absolutely correct. I am only sharing my opinion based on my experience. Our folks from the carribbean do title themselves after their nationality, however they tend to have more of a connection to American Blacks because their experience with our brand of racism . Enter Marcus Garvey who was a Jamaican and preached Black unity in addition Carribean Blacks are several generations ahead of Africans migrating to America over the last 2-3 decades.

"Black" didn't exist until there were a people who called themselves white. Black is political, that's it.

So you can indeed be dark skinned and not consider yourself "Black." it's a political designation and a self-identifier at that.

People who don't have the same political concerns wouldn't have the same labels.

"Black consciousness" as defined by Steve Biko revolves around this concept of unifying people around the world by a single trait -- skin color, but only in opposition to whiteness.

So I don't expect people from other nations to immediately clique up and associate with Black Americans. It's arrogant asf to assume that people want to associate with you based on a single trait that neither of you chose.

They don't have the same culture, language, religion, attitudes etc where they are from. They become "Black" through their politics and seeing how individuals who are the same skin color are treated.

All this shit: race and gender, is convenient. It's political shit people use when its beneficial to them. Not everybody who shares your skin shade is a "brotha" or a "sista" either, that's naive asf.

In this instance, the school is using "hey, they have the same skin color" as a way to circumvent assisting American black students and increasing their American black student population. And yes, that is a problem.

More trash from you. I never once argued being Black in America, Africa or Poland for that matter is different. However, racism against Blacks the world over comes in different forms. America has it's own brand of racism as does europe, Asia etc.

So the smart thing to do when moving or integrating in a new country, culture etc would be to connect with Blacks that know that form of racism from every angle and have been fighting against it for centuries. Not isolate themselves and cower behind their culture, language, or dance.

Foreigners come to the US with Black American stereotypes because, of the white supremacists agenda to paint Black Americans as lazy criminals who were given everything and have done nothing with it. white supremacists have also stereotyped Africans as poor, corrupt and uneducated step children that cannot function without european overseers.

The onus is those migrating to understand their situation and decision in it's totality.

We don't need more people coming here to the states and being fooled by white supremacists which, ultimately ends up being detrimental not just for them but for blacks that have been putting work to stamp out racism.

I have also been made aware that some nations (not sure about Africa) like China are footing entire University tuition for students to study here. The trade off is they have to return and offer their services to their people. So, you're right it's not all cut and dry.

Very very Sad Thread, But at the same time the Conversation needs to be had , Me being an American born citizen being judged by someone from Africa now residing In the States was pretty tough to go through, anger, confusion & disgust was the feeling @ the time. On the other foot I have also seen the other side of the coin where Africans were teased & Disrespected by American born Blacks...Ahhhhh To Walk In Our Skin

I dont play silly games. I am well aware of the negative perspective Africans have towards blacks.

Smh.. Man growing up I was all sorts of Africa booty scratches this.. King of zumunda that.. If Africans don't fuck with Black Americans it's more because of this as opposed to looking down on black Americans..

The fuck?.. Africans ain't black? We ain't the same? Smh..

Man every dark skin nigga was an African booty scratcher. But African immigrants who come over and go straight into the collegiate system don't suffer the same fate.

Being called an African booty scratcher no way compares to what Africans call black people. I forget the word now but you know what I'm talking about.

Africans don't see themselves as Black until it's time to ride that Black American benefit train.

The word you're looking for is "akata"
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akata

Now if Nigerians are calling you that, how's this representative of all Africans? Idiots like you are so narrow minded you let the experiences you have with a group of people in this case Nigerians, cloud your beliefs. How's someone from Botswana gonna call you Akata? Nigga we're all black....if you asked me where I'm from I'd say I'm African, Ghana to be exact!, I came to the States at 17 but for someone born here, they'll say they're Black. Heck I've seen some denounced upon saying they're Black to "Nigga you African" as if that's an insult.
