"assault rifles" is a boogeyman term. Its mostly used by the media (and anti-gun owners) to describe the appearances of a weapon. The closest thing to really fit the "description" would be Fully Automatic rifles. They got the name assault rifles because they were/are used by Armies to....assault the enemy.

Fully Autos are illegal to own in America, but not all rifles are fully auto. The ones you can buy are semi-auto but they mostly look the same

Actually, fully automatic weapons are illegal in The United States but an amateur welder/blacksmith/handyman can modify a semi-automatic weapon into a fully automatic weapon in about 30 minutes. Its really not that difficult if you know anything about machinery.

An SK is a semi-automatic gun that is easy to modify into a fully automatic machine gun.
